HSSD Survey Re Modified/Year-Round School Calendar

Posted Date: 11/29/2022

The HSSD is in the process of exploring the option of a Modified/Year-Round School Calendar for students and staff at all Trojan schools. A change this big requires extensive planning and consideration, and most importantly, it will be based on what is best for students. To figure out what is best for our students and families, we are requesting feedback, please, from our Trojan community. Surveys have been sent to our staff members, parents/guardians, and students. Surveys will close on December 5. Once surveys are completed, and results have been organized and tallied, we will share those results with the HSSD School Board and our community.

Thank you for providing your input regarding the HSSD considering a Modified/Year-Round School Calendar Option.  If you need a survey re-sent to you via email, please send a request to barnesa@hssd.net. If you need a version printed for you, please look for that soon in your child’s take-home items or feel free to reach out to any of our school offices and ask our staff to print a copy for you to complete.

What is Modified/Year-Round School?

It means that we change the traditional school year calendar by reorganizing the 178 days that students are required to be in school, according to Arkansas Law. It does not mean that we extend the school year or the number of days that students are required to attend school.

Do you have an example of a Modified/Year-Round School Calendar?

There are quite a few calendars within the model.  A Modified/Year-Round School Calendar begins school typically in mid-to-late July. Most calendars include a two-week break at the end of every quarter (nine week period). In addition, all students will still be off on major holidays such as Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Holiday Break, Spring Break, Memorial Day, and Independence Day. And, yes, students will have a seven-week summer break, depending on the chosen calendar.

What about childcare during periods when school is not in session?

This is a primary concern for all families. We are exploring options with our staff members and with area partners about what kind of options we might provide at the school and at local facilities to help provide childcare during school breaks. Please share your needs, concerns, and ideas in the survey that you received.

What about providing food during periods when school is not in session?

The HSSD is exploring options with our food service provider Chartwells to determine how we might offer food bundles and/or food offerings via our food trucks and kitchens, when school is not in session.

Who will read these survey results?

Survey results from each individual are completely confidential, and will not be shared with any outside organizations. Survey results are for internal HSSD staff members to review. HSSD Superintendents and Administrators, Staff Teams and Educators, and the HSSD School Board will look at data and comments provided in this survey to make an informed decision about whether to move forward with considering a Modified/Year-Round School Calendar option at the HSSD. Overall results will be organized and tallied, and shared publicly.
