In a Sumdog Math Contest from Oct 26 - Nov 1, Langston 4th grade students in Mrs. Jamie Limbaugh’s class won first place as a class overall during one day of questions, had six students finish among the top 10 in the competition overall, and had the 1st place finisher (BIG congrats to Trenton Moore!) for the most questions answered overall. In total, 206 students played in this area and answered 43,000 math questions. Sumdog is an online learning service that offers engaging game-based student learning opportunities on computers and tablets for math, reading, and writing skills.

HSSD Teams Place 4th in Congressional Challenge

Two apps submitted by teams from the Hot Springs World Class High School EAST program tied for fourth place among the top 5 rankings in Arkansas’s 4th Congressional District, announced by Congressman Bruce Westerman at the Congressional App Challenge Award Ceremony on Friday. HSSD apps and teams that tied for 4th place are: The ELTE App, created by a team comprised of Madeline (Maddie) Scott, Michael Rivera, and Ella Pace; and the Child Check App, created by a team comprised of Bianca Martin, Bonnie Shannon, and Shawn Wilson. These two apps tied for 4th place among 60 eligible entries in this district.

This week, our HSWCHS staff and students took a new state required test (the Arkansas Civics Exam) and turned it into a memorable, engaging Civics Tournament that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression. This is a shout-out to our amazing students who (by the way) are taking the Civics Exam today and Monday and are passing with flying colors. This is also a shout-out to Mrs. Moody, Principal Echols, and all HSWCHS staff for taking yet another testing requirement and turning it into an excellent learning opportunity for everyone. When our students have fun AND learn, it’s an ultimate win for us as educators. Also, see staff shout-outs to Mrs. Shelman, Mrs. Limbaugh, Langston paraprofessionals, and Mr. Hines.

Gardner Lego League Combines Values & Robotics

The Gardner Magnet Lego League is a Robotics Club connected to leagues across the world through the FIRST Lego League Program, which is an alliance program established in 1998 between FIRST (For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology) and the Lego group. Through the program, which establishes an annual theme to guide these efforts, students work through a process of 1) Identifying a real world problem and solution, 2) Completing missions through robots and robotic technology, and 3) Following character-building Core Values. As they prepare for competition in December, learn more about how members intend to solve the problem of food provisions for long-term astronaut missions through cultivating crickets on spaceships to provide a protein-rich food source.
