The HSSD utilizes Capturing Kids Hearts processes across the district. Capturing Kids Hearts is a relationship-building approach to discipline powered by the Flippen Group. >“Capturing Kids’ Hearts shows teachers how to create high-achieving centers of learning by strengthening students’ connectedness to others through enhancing healthy bonds with their teachers and establishing collaborative agreements of acceptable behavior.” Learn more about Capturing Kids Hearts, here. 

The social contract (referred to as an “Essential Agreement” in some classrooms) is a key piece to the Capturing Kids Hearts process. According to the Flippen Group, the Social Contract "acts as the teacher and student's behavior agreement in the classroom."

During the first month of school, we enjoy watching students of all ages collaboratively creating and agreeing to Social Contracts that are age-appropriate to their behaviors and expectations. Students agree to the terms of their Social Contract, and write them in their own words. Educators will refer back to these Social Contracts for the rest of the school year. 

Social Contracts are built on four basic questions: 1) How do you want to be treated by me (from the educator)?; 2) How do you want to be treated by each other?; 3) How do you think I (the educator) want to be treated by you?; 4) How do you want to treat each other when there is conflict?

All Trojans participate in this process in every class; See our kindergarten Trojans (from Mrs. Burris’ class at Oaklawn STEM Magnet School), 1st grade Trojans (from Mrs. Langston’s class at Park Magnet, an IB World School), and high school Trojans in grades 10-12 (from Mrs. Jackson’s class at Hot Springs World Class High School) creating Social Contracts below.
