Every year, the HSSD proudly honors a Teacher of the Year for each of our schools. Teachers are nominated for the honor by their peers. The leadership team at each school asks those nominated to submit information about their work as an educator, and carefully reviews all responses before selecting the annual Teacher of the Year.

All six HSSD Teachers of the Year are then considered interviewed for the HSSD District Teacher of the Year by an outside committee of community members. Join us in celebrating each of our Teachers of the Year by hearing from all six outstanding educators in interviews and videos provided here. The 2020 HSSD District Teacher of the Year will be announced on Friday, May 29.

Congratulations to Gardner STEM Teacher of the Year Stephanie Moody.

Mrs. Moody has been changing lives as an educator for eight years at the Hot Springs School District. She currently teaches kindergarten at our Gardner STEM Magnet School (soon-to-be Oaklawn STEM Magnet School).

Why did you become a teacher?

“I became a teacher because that is what I felt I was called to do. I remember as a kid I always enjoyed playing teacher with my cousins. It is a profession that I remember wanting to have, growing up. The joy of knowing that I can help make a difference, is so rewarding. It is something I want to be a part of. “

What is your favorite/most inspiring story about your career in teaching?
“Being in education creates the opportunities for relationships. Relationships that you have with your students, parents, and co-workers. I aim to create a positive rapport with those around me. I want them to know, I am here. I am here as a teacher, friend, mentor, the list could go on.”

“This past year I had a parent reach out to me. A parent of a former student. Her son was with me for half of his kindergarten year last year and then they moved out of state suddenly. Well, mid year of this year, this parent emails me. She was asking me for guidance. I was blown away. Out of all the people that this mom could reach out to, she reached out to me. A person that she has not had any contact with for over a year! This just made my heart so happy to know that she knew she could come to me. She wasn't asking for money or transportation, she was asking for advice. This was truly an inspiration for me to continue building strong rapport. Even if I feel that I am not making a difference, unknowingly I could be.”

If you could give one message to your students, that you hope they remember above all other things that you've taught them, what would it be?
I want them to remember that they can do anything they put their mind to and anything is possible. I want them to know that even when things get tough, they can persevere. Always remember to use your manners and be kind. A quote that I have always loved is ‘No Act of Kindness No Matter How Small is ever wasted. ALWAYS STRIVE TO BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF!’”
