Every year, the HSSD proudly honors a Teacher of the Year for each of our schools. Teachers are nominated for the honor by their peers. The leadership team at each school asks those nominated to submit information about their work as an educator, and carefully reviews all responses before selecting the annual Teacher of the Year.

All six HSSD Teachers of the Year are then considered interviewed for the HSSD District Teacher of the Year by an outside committee of community members. Join us in celebrating each of our Teachers of the Year by hearing from all six outstanding educators in interviews and videos provided here. The 2020 HSSD District Teacher of the Year will be announced on Friday, May 29.

Congratulations to Langston Elementary Leadership Academy Teacher of the Year Rebecca Holder.

Ms. Holder has been changing lives for nine years at the Hot Springs School District, and 12 in all as a teacher. She currently teaches third grade at our Langston Elementary Leadership Academy.

Why did you become a teacher?

“I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. When I was a little girl, I loved ‘playing school,’ so it was no surprise that I became a teacher. Teaching is the most rewarding profession and I hope to make a difference in the lives of my students.”

What is your favorite/most inspiring story about your career in teaching?
One year, I had a new student from El Salvador. Not only was she new to our school, but she was new to our country. She did not speak any English, so it was very challenging in the classroom. Luckily, I am ESL certified and had the help of support staff and her classmates who translated. I relied heavily on visual aides and did one-on-one tutoring. That year, the girl showed amazing growth and could speak, read, and write some English. I have never seen a student persevere and work so hard. She is an inspiration to all students.”

If you could give one message to your students, that you hope they remember above all other things that you've taught them, what would it be?
I want my students to know they can be successful and achieve their dreams as long as they put their mind to it. I am always rooting for them, because they will always be ‘MY kid!’”
