As a special project to honor and study Black History Month, 5th grade students in Ms. Hicks’ class at our HSSD Langston Elementary Leadership Academy worked together with partners to create biographies of famous African Americans.

Ms. Hicks pointed out - the primary purpose of this project was to make connections between individuals and events in history that impacted the United States. Some of the those chosen included Ella Fitzgerald, Josephine Baker, Harriet Tubman, Ray Charles, and Langston Hughes. “This was important for our kids because they learned how these people paved the way and helped create a world for unity …,” she said.

Requirements for the book biographies included completion of a timeline documenting how the individual made an impact throughout his/her life, major contributions made by the person, character traits, a written biography, a major theme or lesson learned from the person’s life, and a famous quote from the individual. The lesson combined reading and social studies standards, and created collaborative, memorable experiences for our kids - about actual historic heroes!
