Juniors at our Hot Springs World Class High School traveled back in time today, as the new Library Media Center was used as the host site for a hands-on, interactive experience to model the 1920s - including an archive of historic documents and photographs, activities and board games, films, photo booth, and large collection of memorabilia from the time period. Thank you Mrs. Shipman, Mrs. Knapick and Mrs. Fortanelli for putting the site together for another year in coordination with the completion of a unit on the 1920s era in 11th grade U.S. History classes.

The group watched a short silent film, and discussed the differences in acting, production, and the viewing experience for films without sound. They looked through black and white photographs of famous people who frequented Hot Springs during the time including Babe Ruth and Al Capone. They also examined images of Central Avenue and downtown Hot Springs during the period when many buildings that make up our current skyline were being built. Photographs also included school buildings within our district, allowing students to discuss the various changes that have taken place at the HSSD that make us such a rich part of Hot Springs history. Students enjoyed collections of old photographs featuring Hot Springs graduates, paired with yearbooks, letters, notes, newspaper clippings, and report cards. Students dressed up for a photo booth stocked with hats, scarves, and headpieces that were in fashion. They were also introduced to dice games like Bunco, which were made popular during the 1920s and shared across many households. Finally, in the new media center, a video played featuring history and stories about gangsters who became powerful during the time period.

Thank you Mrs. Shipman, Mrs. Knapick and Mrs. Fortanelli for making learning fun with hands-on, interactive events that help to bring history to life for our kids!
