First grade students at our Park Magnet, an IB World School, read about the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and focused on stories from his childhood. Mrs. Sligh lead students in a discussion about how as a young boy, he and others were not treated fairly. She explained that as he grew and developed into a leader, he stood up for what was right, and created changes for how people should be treated. Mrs. Sligh assigned students a craft to help them remember and enjoy the lesson. Students created “Free to Be Me” necklaces to celebrate who they are as individuals, to celebrate the friendships that they all share, and to remind of the importance of celebrating our differences in love and kindness.
