Educators are faced with the ever-present challenge of keeping students engaged during classroom time. Amid the various tactics used for fostering student learning and achievement, teachers develop various creative strategies to keep young minds at work. Langston 4th grade students in Mrs. Limbaugh’s class choose from multiple learning centers and daily supplemental reading for time between assignments. Many enjoy most the daily rebus puzzle. A rebus is a puzzle device that combines the use of illustrated pictures with individual letters to depict words and/or phrases.  Rebus puzzles are a fun way to reinforce reading skills, build and refine critical thinking, and the puzzles expose students to new vocabulary and ideas during discussion as a class at the end of each day.

To participate in this activity, the student designated as “Puzzle Master” chooses a new rebus puzzle every day. The puzzle of the day is displayed on a bulletin board. Students then draw small, blank cards from pockets underneath the puzzle. They may guess as many times as they like, by writing their guesses on the blank cards and inserting them into pockets assigned to them on the other side of the room. All guesses must be placed in the correct pockets, and must include a student’s name on the back. Each afternoon, the Puzzle Master checks guesses and identifies the students that got the puzzle answer correct. Students with correct answers will receive a prize from Mrs. Limbaugh. Once winners have been announced, the Puzzle Master assigns a new puzzle for the next day.

Unique learning centers, supplemental reading and assignments, and fun challenges like rebus puzzles are another way that our HSSD teachers and staff members work to make a difference in the lives of our kids by making learning fun and engaging.
