The Hot Springs School District Administration and School Board are pleased to announce

that after a comprehensive application process, Mrs. Kristen Gordon has been selected as the new Principal for the HSSD Oaklawn Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School beginning July 1, 2019.

Mrs. Gordon is a native of Hot Spring and an alumni of the Hot Springs School District (she started kindergarten at our own Gardner STEM Magnet School). She returned to HSSD to pursue her career in education ten years ago. She served as a fourth grade teacher, Literacy Instructional Facilitator, and has been Assistant Principal at OVPA for three years. She earned a BS in Early Childhood Education from the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, and an MSE in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to hire one of our own as the new Principal of our wonderful Oaklawn Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School,” says HSSD Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Nehus. “OVPA is a pillar in the Hot Springs community for visual and performing arts, and is renowned for offering memorable student performances and making a lasting impact on student academic achievement. One of four excellent magnet elementary schools in our district, OVPA will continue to flourish under the leadership of Mrs. Gordon.”

“I am eager and excited for this new adventure. Thank you to our HSSD leadership team and our School Board for this opportunity to continue leading in a district that I love,” says Mrs. Gordon. She adds, “I will continue our focus to work through our Professional Learning Communities (PLC), which is allowing us to collaboratively develop excellent classroom curriculum and improve student engagement. We have an amazing team of staff members, and wonderful students. I am honored to lead this team, and continue fostering our passion for serving students and the community through the arts.”

Mrs. Gordon is married to Matt Gordon. They have a son, Luke, who will begin kindergarten at OVPA next year. Regarding the school’s magnet theme of visual and performing arts, she says “I look forward to continuing the great work at Oaklawn, and truly believe in what we do to integrate arts into student academic learning and growth at the highest levels!”

The mission of the Hot Springs School District is to educate and empower each student to graduate from high school college and/or career ready, respect diversity, and to be contributing members of a global society. Learn more at www.hssd.net.
