Each year, the HSSD proudly honors a Teacher of the Year for each of our schools, and a Teacher of the Year for the entire district. At each school, teachers may nominate peers for the award. Nominees provide information about their work as an educator, and submit it to the leadership team at each school. A Teacher of the Year is then selected by the school leadership team at each school from all nominees. Each Teacher of the Year (7 total) is then considered for the HSSD Teacher of the Year by an outside committee of community members. The HSSD Teacher of the Year will be announced on May 24.

For Teacher Appreciation Week, we are proud to celebrate each Teacher of the Year at all 7 of our HSSD schools with unique stories about their background and their contribution to our world class students.

Learn more about HSJA Teacher of the Year Karina Miller:

What year, and where did you start teaching?

My first year teaching was at Magnet Cove in 2003

How many years have you taught at the HSSD?

I have taught mathematics 15 years at the HSSD

Why do you love your job?

I love creating positive learning experiences for students in order to decrease their apprehensions toward math. I love when students hear about what we are doing before they arrive in my class, so that they enter with anticipation that something special is waiting for them. I love to watch students go through the struggle prior to solving a problem and how they transform from surprise, shock, and then pride and confidence when they get the right answer.

What makes you most proud of the HSSD, and why?

Our diversity. I love the potential and the challenges that our diversity brings.

What is the one thing that you hope MOST to teach your students?

To develop a true sense of what mathematics is about, beyond the numbers and calculations - we use math to strengthen our logical skills. We will not always get the right answer in the first attempt, but through hard work and perseverance, we can always try again.
