Bio Poems for U.S. Presidents at Gardner

How do you summarize the biographies of our 45 United States Presidents? Gardner STEM third grade students in Ms. Sierocuk’s class wrote bio poems, created illustrations to accompany each poem, and presented their work to the class. As part of the Presidents Unit, the project included writing, art, and speaking skills, and challenged them to learn collaboratively about U.S. leaders.

Ms. Sierocuk began by having students write a bio poem about themselves. She provided a research prompt that described poem content for each line, and included: name, four jobs held by the individual during his life; birthplace, education, resident of, three good things the individual did for the U.s., a nickname, and more. Students conducted their own research to complete each segment of the poem, and then typed a final version in a neatly shaped pyramid format. They attached each poem beneath an illustration, which they also drew themselves, by hand.

“I tried to give as little guidance as possible for this project, so that they were forced to be very collaborative and creative. They enjoyed working together to find dependable research and were surprised to find that many of our Presidents are very interesting individuals,” says Ms. Sierocuk. “This unit prompts us to talk about geography as we identify where each leader was born, and talk about the history and culture of the time as it relates to what was accomplished by officials during each period. I enjoy watching them improve their work as they provide feedback in small groups, and then offering such unique presentations to the entire class.”
