HSJA staff members have set an extraordinary example for students during a four-week Step Challenge organized by Nurse Miki Smith. 29 participants competed in teams divided by departments. The winning team - Team Electives -  logged 1,340,787 steps over the course of the challenge. Participants entered steps in individual logs each day for four weeks. Pedometers were graciously donated by the Arkansas Heart Hospital.

“Good examples set by teachers, advisors, mentors, parents, and other influences in the lives of our students make such a difference in teaching healthy habits,” says Nurse Smith. “This Step Challenge was a fun way for our staff members to improve wellness in their own lives and show students how to include physical activity in day-to-day planning. We hope to do another challenge before the end of the school year. Thank you to everyone that participated!”

30-day health challenges and other resources for schools and families are provided through the Healthy Active Arkansas program. Find ideas for other ways to inspire wellness in classrooms and homes via a tool kit from Healthy Active Arkansas, here.
