At the HSSD, we have four outstanding EAST (Education Advanced by Service and Technology ) Programs at Gardner STEM Magnet School, Hot Springs Intermediate School, Hot Springs Junior Academy, and the Hot springs World Class High School. The EAST Model of education features student-driven service projects accomplished with the latest technology. EAST classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art workstations, servers, software, and accessories including GPS/GIS mapping tools, architectural and CAD design software, 3D animation suites, and much more. Students find problems in their local communities, and then use these tools to solve them.


Each spring, more than 2,500 students, teachers, parents, and community and business leaders attend the national EAST Conference. This three-day exhibition event and competition at the Hot Springs Convention Center celebrates and challenges EAST students to learn and perform at the highest levels.


For the first time, the HSWCHS EAST Team won a prestigious Project Sophistication & innovation Award for 2018-2019. The Project Sophistication Award recognizes their collection of projects as an EAST team as among the most advanced and distinguished of any program in the United States. Miles Hermann of the HSWCHS EAST Team also won an individual project award in the ARCHICAD Competition, which is an architectural competition that challenges students to design a building or facility that will enhance the community for the greater good using ARCHICAD software.

Hot Springs World Class High School


Homeless House - Eliot Williard
Eliot created a design for a portable homeless shelter to provide a cost-effective, permanent home for individuals who are part of the growing homeless community. A micro camper with cheap, upcycled materials, the Homeless House design uses corrugated plastic from political signs and old wood. Utilizing partners like Hot Springs Jackson House, this project plan includes teamwork from within the homeless community.


Outdoor Classroom - Keziah Dotson and Maddison Brown

Keziah and Maddison organized and petitioned for an outdoor classroom area in the woods behind the HSWCHS. The main space of the classroom would be reserved as an alternate classroom space for teachers and students. They have worked with partners including the Garland County Master Gardeners to create 3D designs of realistic classroom models and a comprehensive budget analysis.


RFID - a multi-school team including HSWCHS, Fayetteville, and Lakeside Middle School
Team Members: Madelynne Brown, Dalton Evans, Bianca Martin, Karmen McCaslin, Evan Meyers, Ashley Nelson, Ella Pace, Tanner Peaslee, Madeline Scott, Bonnie Shannon, and Caleb Cannon.

The EAST programs partnered remotely to build a model for bracelets and backpacks embedded with RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) chips, devices that would ultimately be used by schools to help keep track of students. Multiple databases at each school could provide the last relative location of a child, should a student be reported missing by any school leadership or officials. EAST groups involved hope that far reaching impacts for this could be a reduction in kidnappings, human trafficking, and general improvement of student safety in schools and at home. The Hot Springs Public Schools Education Foundation helped provide funding for this groundbreaking project.


EMMI - Maddie Scott and Ella Pace
Maddie and Ella created a method for generating 3D models of cancer tumors to solve a doctor-patient educational gap. Their project was inspired by a brain-related tumor diagnosis for a friend, where they learned about the personal confusion and oftentimes shock that goes along with patients who receive serious medical news for the first time. Using a 3D printer, and knowledge gained from many dedicated hours of surgical observation and interviews with cancer patients, the ladies created a way to produce 3D models of cancer tumors so that doctors can provide tangible tumor models to patients. The community partner for this project is Dr. John Pace.


Aerospace Industry Video - Kerry Ferrell II, Jackson Ratcliff, and Ian Byrd

“Aerospace” is a five minute video introduction and overview of the aerospace industry in Hot Springs, created to peak the interest of prospective students to the industry and to the area. Companies featured are Triumph Group Inc., Cobalt Aerospace Services, CMT Inc., and Air Tech Supply. The video will be featured in the Intro to Aerospace Course offered through National Park Community College.


Wave-a-way App - Elliot Williard

Wave-a-way is a lake delivery app designed to allow individuals to order an array of items and services while out on the lake. From sunscreen to pizza, emergency assistance, towing needs, and even fuel, the app allows for the placing of orders, tracking of delivery, and general communication between customers and service providers. Elliot has worked with Jeremi Owen, creator of A Wave Away.


Ministry Website, Joel Gray

Joel created a website to highlight an afterschool program available through High Impact Ministries of Hot Springs that offers games, snacks, homework assistance, and general after school activities.


LS3 - Cody Burgett

The LS3 project is a “working” model of a Chevrolet LS3 motor produced through a 3D printer. This serves as a valuable learning tool for students of mechanics. Cody worked with the Automotive Service at National Park Community College and Mr. Lee Ratcliff to complete the model.


American Red Cross Heroes - Kerry Ferrell and Isabel Ritter

The “American Red Cross Heroes” is a video series highlighting everyday people who have been recognized as heroes for their impact on the community and/or their efforts to change the lives of others. Each video is 1-3 minutes long, and highlights the story of a unique individual. Video series like these are used each year at the Red Cross Banquet.


ESPN Trojan Activities Report - Logan Comstock, Blake McLelland, and Tony Mason

Logan, Blake, and Tony provide a weekly update of all Trojan sports activities, via radio feed on ESPN 96.3 Radio. They record the script at the end of each week, and oftentimes collaborate with coaches or students to incorporate interviews about sports highlights. Their community partner is Karen Hill from ESPN 96.3.


ESSA - Kerry Ferrell and Isabel Ritter

Kerry and Isabel created a Public Service Announcement to explain the requirements and provisions of the Every Students Succeeds Act for the Arkansas Department of Education. The video is used by ADE to communicate details about the act to Arkansas families. Their community partner was Melissa Bratton.


Virtual School Map - Javondrick Winzer

Javondrick worked with HSWCHS Assistant Principal Ben Iverson to develop an online, interactive map of all HSSD campuses. The map shows all emergency exits and emergency scenario plans. This tool can be used by school officials for emergency planning, and by new students to become familiar with schools.


CyberPatriot - Garrett Cannon, Ethan Abel, Michael Rivera, Jonathan Harris, and Jeremy Gentry

CyberPatriot is a program that allows students and aspiring network technicians to learn and practice Cyber Security skills. Software within CyberPatriot emulates real computer networks, which can be as simple as as a small company or as complex as an entire city. Community partners are the HSSHD, and the NJROTC.

App Challenge: Child Check App

The purpose of the Child Check App is to guarantee that parents receive notification if a child is left alone in a vehicle, or if a child stops breathing. Through RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) this app connects through a preferred mobile device of the user to send a notification if a reader device in the car detects that a child is alone. The app is set up to work with a chip and a reader that are installed in a car. The chip (encased in a tag just like the chip on a credit card) could be installed anywhere on a child’s car seat. The reader could be installed anywhere in a vehicle. If the reader senses that a child is left alone, it sends an alert to the device connected through the app. The reader is also programmed to tell whether a child stops breathing, or if his/her temperature begins to change.

App-Challenge: ELTE

The purpose of the ELTE (English Language Translation Engine) App is to allow universal communication between individuals, including those who are visually impaired or blind with those who are nonverbal or deaf. Through a coding platform, the app allows for messages from any device to be translated quickly to Morse Code or American Sign Language based on the user preferences and needs.The app is targeted for blind to deaf communication and deaf to blind communication for individuals with either type of needs.  For blind to deaf communication, the app translates a message spoken by a blind person into a message communicated via American Sign Language on a video screen for the deaf person. ELTE then translates a message signed in front of a screen or typed into a device by a deaf person into Morse Code for a deaf or person.


Ma-key Ma-key Stations - Elise and Eban Sanders, Nina Gunnell, Tillie Reagler, Liliana Boekhout, and Marly Archie

The Ma-key Ma-key project was created to introduce students to relevant and growing technology in a fun and interesting way. HSWCHS EAST students collaborated with Gardner STEM Magnet School and Park Magnet, an IB World School to present Ma-key Ma-key workshops to elementary students, which featured a variety of games including coin counting, a banana piano, apple worm, and caterpillar crossing.


Purple Heart - Elijah Williams

Elijah created a project that designates “Purple Heart Parking” at businesses, that are reserved specifically for Purple Heart Medal of Honor recipients. Community partners include Arkansas Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Mark Diggs, and Dr. Praetzel.


Hot Springs Junior Academy


Poultry Project

Students worked through the Garland County 4H Program to obtain chicken eggs, which they incubated in their classroom. Once hatched, they also kept baby chicks (in boxes) in their classroom for a short period. They had a very successful hatch of 30-35 chickens. As the chicks grew, students built a spacious outdoor chicken coop and pens at the front of the Hot Springs Junior Academy campus, next to the urban garden area. They also designed and built a highly advanced fodder system, or hydroponic feeding system, to keep the chickens fed. The hydroponic system is on a timer that grows seeds into fodder in just seven days, and uses only water. Students continue to support habitat and feed needs of the flock by selling eggs to teachers and local partners.


Jackson House Building

Students designed a multi-use facility to add on to the Jackson House, equipped and designed to provide an area for homeless residents with food, showers, bathrooms, and a full classroom with computers.


Habitat for Humanity 3D

Students created 3D models of floor plans designed for homes to be built by the Habitat for Humanity, so that families can visualize their homes before they are built. The plans are also created into puzzles to allow for children to be part of the planning process.


Video Series to Highlight Turpentine Creek Animal Refuge

Students created a video for promotion via social media platforms that highlights endangered tigers that reside at Turpentine Creek, in hopes of drawing more visitors and more funds to the refuge.


National Park Coloring Book

The group creatively captured the historic Hot Springs National Park area in a coloring book for children. Each page includes an image designed from photos of Hot Springs historic buildings and special locations. Students hope to build interest from younger audiences in learning more about all there is to do in the Hot Springs area.


MindBike

Created for patients who have suffered traumatic brain injuries, the MindBike is a stationary bike that also helps patients to regain and improve cognitive abilities.  All functions of the bike can be controlled by iPhone.


Hot Springs Intermediate School


No Kidd-Napping on My Watch

Students are designing a watch that could be programmed to alert the child wearing the watch and parents with an app connected to the watch with a loud reminder message when a child gets too far from supervision. Additionally, the watch would have GPS tracking to provide quick reference for parents and officials if a child is kidnapped. The group is collaborating with community partners at the Hot Springs Police Department and the National Park College Innovative Technologies Center.


HSIS Virtual Tour

Students created a 360 degree virtual tour of the Hot Springs intermediate School to help new students better understand how to navigate the campus.


Garland County Humane Society Commercial

Students worked with the Garland County Humane Society to capture and edit footage to build awareness of needs at the center and new homes for pets.


Trash Planet

Another group is using special software to design an interactive game about making environmentally responsible steps to clean up our streets, namely through trash pickup. The virtual reality game is being built through Unreal Engine software to make it as lifelike as possible. The students have reached out to the game developer company Schell Games in efforts to get help with designing and testing of the software and system.


Outdoor Food Pantry

Students have designed a model for a weatherproof mini foot pantry, where homeless families have access to canned food items donated by the community.


All-Inclusive Playground

Created presentation for HSSD leadership to consider the installation of an All-Inclusive playground, which includes playground equipment for students with disabilities.


Gardner STEM Magnet School


Composting Project

The Garland County Master Gardeners, EAST at Gardner students, and third grade classes are collaborating to create multiple composting bins at Gardner STEM Magnet School. The process of building compost piles, determining what and how to add items to the compost, and then using compost to enhance area flower beds and eventually a vegetable garden is being documented via video series. EAST students are collecting and editing all video segments, and will provide a “how-to” process in the videos for other students to replicate the effort and understand more about how composting makes an impact on a more environmentally-friendly community and campus.


STEM Day events at Gardner STEM Magnet School

Students partnered with Gardner Principal Mrs. Newborn and Gardner Instructional Facilitator Mrs. Burden to help plan and document the first ever STEM Day event at Gardner. EAST students served as photographers, videographers, and content editors in documenting the special event. Fifteen unique stations for kindergarten-1st grade and 19 unique stations for 2nd-5th grade students were designed by the committee. Stations each required curriculum, tools and resources, and instructors. The undertaking also required help from parent volunteers, as students were rotating in and out of classrooms, the library and cafeteria, computer labs, and other locations throughout the school. A second Gardner STEM Day event is planned for March 15.


ChildCare Aware Event

Students provided a booth at the STEAM Conference and Arkansas Children’s Week event, where they took photos via Photo Booth, and visited with pre-school organizations about EAST offerings and partnership opportunities. Partners for the events included the ChildCare Aware of West Central Arkansas, National Park College, and Hot Springs Early Childhood Association.


Change the World with Kindness Project

Students collect examples of kindness from teachers and students. They showcase acts on their daily news broadcast (oftentimes featured via Facebook live)  and create “thank you” cards to acknowledge kind acts performed across the school. This same group also works to send letters with kind messages to hospital patients in the area.


Public Service Announcements

EAST students work with Gardner staff members to highlight upcoming events (like STEM Days and the annual Winter Carnival) via carefully crafted PSAs. This allows students to learn how to create content, organize and edit facts, and choose platforms for publicizing events and announcements.


Coding Basics

As the youngest group of EAST students at the HSSD, and one of the few elementary EAST programs in Arkansas, it is important to start building skills that involve the basics of computer coding. Through several skills-based programs including Applied Digital Skills Courses, TechStart, Hour of Code, and Code.Org K-5, students have learned and practiced computer coding skills throughout the year.
