At the Hot Springs Intermediate School, a special club is changing perspectives for 6th grade girls by way of a dedicated study in leadership and community service through the practice of good etiquette. The P.I.N.K. club, which stands for “Proud, Intelligent, and Noble Kids,” is led by 6th grade teacher Mrs. Wilda Hughley. Members, reserved only for 6th grade girls, meet twice each month after school for one-hour meetings and meet for service projects. One meeting is dedicated to coordinating service projects in the community. The other meeting is set aside for a guest speaker and rotating lesson theme. The club provides a foundation in a girls-only setting for friendship, manners, discipline, gratitude, confidence and work ethic.

“This club is about showing and encouraging our young ladies how to be role models,” said Mrs. Hughley. At the beginning of each school year, she sends a letter home with all 6th grade girls and invites them to participate. To be qualified for the club, students must keep a grade no lower than a “C”, and never be assigned to in-school suspension. Those that join work with Mrs. Hughley to develop eight sections, one per month from October - May, that focus on etiquette, manners, and leadership skills. Each lesson is tied to a service project and a guest speaker.

For their November project, the club served meals to Veterans at the Hot Springs Elks Lodge following a lesson on the importance of showing gratitude in the form of service and gestures like “thank you” notes. Their December lesson was dedicated to creating a table setting, as many families enjoy formal settings during the holidays. They have worked to secure the donations of scarves and gloves, which they plan to deliver to the Lakewood Nursing Home during Christmas Break while they visit residents and join them for a bingo game. Upcoming projects for the spring include a Daddy/Daughter Dance, teacher appreciation project, mini fashion show, and a visit to Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

“If we can show our young people now how to support and interact respectfully with each other, and value friendship and community service, we are helping them to build great character traits. The girls love the opportunity to come up with ways to support this community, show appreciation to our staff and their families, and enjoy open dialogue with speakers that bring new perspectives to them. We have fun and we enjoy camaraderie, while we learn and serve.”

There are currently 14 members in the HSIS P.I.N.K. club including: Raven Mitchell, Ashley Roberson, Adriana Mathews, Harmony Gates, Sevanna Jennings, Renee Nduku, Tiara Boyd, A’lyse Fites, Kinzie Landers, Rihanna Johninson, Ny’kieviauna Ross, Serenity Hancock, Jadyce Stewart, and Kimora Eason.
