This week, our HSWCHS staff and students took a new state required test and turned it into a memorable, engaging tournament that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on our students. During a Civics Tournament hosted yesterday at the High School Gym, we watched our 9th-12th grade students competing and excited over Civics Exam questions taken directly from the U.S. Naturalization Test, and it was wonderful. Mrs. Moody organized tournament brackets for each grade and staff hosted tournaments from 10/25 - 11/6, allowing all students to compete for a spot in the championship tournament on 11/8. More important than the tournament, our students were learning content directly tied to the history and laws of the United States, and they won’t forget it because of the engaging, exciting way that we presented material. This is a shout-out to our amazing students who (by the way) are taking the Civics Exam today and Monday and are passing with flying colors. This is also a shout-out to Mrs. Moody, Principal Echols, and all HSWCHS staff for taking yet another testing requirement and turning it into an excellent learning opportunity for everyone. When our students have fun AND learn, it’s an ultimate win for us as educators.

Now, here are some great shout-outs submitted from anonymous HSSD staff members:

- Congrats to Debbie Shelman (Langston Art Teacher) for presenting at the Arkansas Art Educators Conference!

- Great job to Jamie Limbaugh (Langston 4th grade teacher) for encouraging her students in the state Sumdog Math Contest

- Thank you to our Langston paraprofessionals in Mrs. Edward's and Mrs. Gates classrooms - who went above and beyond in chaperoning and supervising students who went to the Family Farm's 2018 Fall Harvest Days Pumpkin Patch on November 1st. The weather was drizzly and cold, but the students were all smiles as they learned at the petting zoo, made arts and crafts, and even went on a hayride! Thank you Langston super-paras for your professionalism and warm hearts.

- “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”  HSJA has been blessed to have Mr. Hines’ leadership during the recovery of Mrs. Lenox. He is a true example of the above quote. Mr. Hines has done an outstanding job taking on the role of principal and goes above and beyond to make sure the building runs smoothly. He begins and ends each day with a genuine smile on his face and strives to ensure quality learning takes place. Mr. Hines is a quality role-model for educators and students. Thank you, Mr. Hines, for all you have done and will continue to do for us!
