Hot Springs School District students benefit from an International Baccalaureate (IB) education in many ways throughout their years with us. In the IB-Primary Years Program (PYP) at Park, a primary focus is to challenge students to think for themselves and take responsibility for their learning while exploring local and global issues in real-life contexts. Mrs. Stefanie Ray’s third grade class read Carl the Complainer by Michelle Knudsen, a funny tale about an individual that discovers how to turn complaints into actions that benefit his community.

“One of the key focuses of IB learning is to move students from a lesson to an action. An action is a change in behavior, thought, or act that arises from genuine concern or commitment. This is a small way that we encourage our students to stay lifelong learners, and hopefully - make a positive impact on the world through their actions,” says Mrs. Kristal Brandon, Park Magnet School PYP Coordinator.

Two student teams were especially moved by this story. Aakiera Mallory, Starlah Hicks, and Carmen Lealie wrote a petition for a Park Gymnastics Club. They secured over 100 signatures and met with Park Principal Dr. Oatsvall about her thoughts and input for implementing an official Gymnastics Club at Park.  Olivia Hernandez and Hampton Crain created a petition for a Pet Parade Day with full rules and regulations for parade requirements including an entry fee. Fees collected would be donated to the local Humane Society.
