Our Oaklawn Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School was approved by the Arkansas Department of Education as a school site for the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) Pilot Project in 2018. A “PLC” - a term and process coined by Solution Tree - is a group of educators that meets regularly, shares expertise, and works collaboratively to improve teaching skills and the academic performance of students. Oaklawn has experienced great success through utilization of the process, and OVPA staff members have been requested multiple times to present about the PLC process for other schools at the HSSD and across the state. OVPA has proudly been selected by Solution Tree as one of three school sites in Arkansas for a video documentary about how PLCs are used to improve student learning through collaborative teaching and training.

Students, parents, and guests to OVPA can expect to see a camera crew at the school throughout the year, to document how our staff members use the PLC process in different classrooms and across subject areas and grades. Starting tomorrow (Thursday, August 29), the crew will periodically visit OVPA to interview school leadership and educators. Don’t worry, we will share the official video documentary as soon as it is published, which should be in the summer of 2020. Congrats to our dedicated, outstanding OVPA staff members for being selected as a leader school team in Arkansas for their success in utilizing this groundbreaking educational process!

The PLC process is now being used by the entire HSSD in all schools.
