Trojan Good Things is published each week by HSSD Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Nehus ...

Our Trojan Good Things this week highlights Black History Month. It is an absolute privilege to work at a district and to have children enrolled in a district that values all children and all people, and that looks like the real world in terms of our diverse array of kids and families, staff members and partners, and leaders. American History is Black History and vice versa. Diversity is reality. Loving, serving, teaching, and collaborating between our staff members and with our students with equality and equity and love is one of the greatest tasks we are called to do. Black History Month was created to tell stories that celebrate our African American heroes and leaders, and to simply tell the stories of African American individuals throughout history. Thank you for modeling equality, respect, and kindness for all in all that you do here at school and in your homes. Thank you for highlighting the importance of Black History Month for our kids - whether you’ve done so this month with memorable performances and events, planned programs and guest speakers, or classroom activities and artwork. I hear from students all the time, “I love the HSSD because I fit in here.” Beyond offering a high quality education, and an extracurricular program or activity for all, I really do believe that YOU all have created a culture that celebrates every child from every walk of life and of every race, color and ethnicity. That makes me so deeply proud, and I hope it does you, too.

Tuesday of this week was School Bus Driver Appreciation DayI Thank you to our drivers and the entire team in our Maintenance and Transportation Department. Without safe and reliable transportation to/from school and to/from events and activities, we could not operate as a public school. Thank you for the tremendous job that you do! We also deeply appreciate and greatly thank those from the Maintenance and Transportation Department, Mr. Echols, and Chief Seymour for the many hours dedicated this week to monitoring weather conditions and driving roads across our district at all hours of the night and day. We are lucky to have dependable professionals who care so deeply about our students and our staff, and the safety of us all. I also appreciate all of you for being proactive in preparing AMI work for our kids, and for your commitment to making sure students receive continuous education even when our classrooms close.
