There aren’t many areas where you will find such a unified team of school districts, as right here in Garland County. That was more evident than ever this week at another successful Garland County Reads event, which is a collaboration between Garland County school districts and a wonderful community of partners, volunteers, and supporters. I want to highlight the Garland County Reads event this week because of the importance it places with relationships. Relationships are important to us as educators as we teach literacy skills to our students and hopefully inspire in them a lifelong enjoyment of reading. Relationships are vital to our schools as we invite community leaders and partners to support events that create excitement for our students about key skills like reading. Finally, relationships are so important to us as educators as we collaborate across schools and programs to set an example of lifelong reading, community service, and taking care of each other.

Thank you to all HSSD staff who put in weeks of planning and collaborating for this event, and thanks to those of you that hosted booths, or helped to make booth items, or volunteered with student groups at the event. Thank you to our partner school districts and partner attendees from the city, county, and state level. And, thank you to the wonderful, energetic students and parents that attended.  Find a full list of sponsors, participating school districts, community readers, and photos, here.

Finally, see an awesome shout-out submitted from anonymous HSSD staff to Oaklawn Magnet teachers Angela Bates and Katie Bradley for their implementation of the Co-Teach model. These two have been working hard with Boundless Learning through John Hopkins University and the Co-Teach Pilot of Arkansas. This week (the week of October 19) the co-teach team at Oaklawn was filmed during their check-in meeting. This video will be used at an upcoming national conference! Way to go and THANK YOU to Angela and Katie!

Trojan ‘Good Things’ is a weekly shout out from #HSSD Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Nehus to those individuals in our school community who are doing amazing things! It is her goal to communicate all the positives happening in #HSSD. If you have any special events happening in your classes or buildings or if you know of someone we need to give a shout out to, please complete the form at
