Each year, the Hot Springs National Park Sister City Foundation graciously sponsors a trip for 8-11th grade students from Garland County to Hanamaki, Japan (Sister City to Hot Springs) for approximately one week. Up to 10 students will be chosen to travel to represent Hot Springs in early June, 2019.

The approximate cost of the trip is $2,500, plus the cost of a passport and incidental expenses. The enrollment period for applying to be selected as a student attendee, and to be considered to attend on a scholarship, is open through December 21, 2018. Please note, the awarding of scholarships is contingent upon the availability of funds. Partial scholarships may also be offered.

Assistant HSWCHS Principal Kiley Simms has been part of the teacher delegation with this program, and highly recommends the opportunity to students. “Traveling in general is a great experience for students. It’s hard to teach them in a classroom about how big the world is, and more importantly - how to help them understand that their opinions and experiences may not be the only way to see things. On this trip, students stay in host homes and get to live day-to-day lives with a family. They see cultural landmarks, tour schools, and hear from teenagers in Hanamaki. I’ll help any student that wants to apply.”

Mrs. Simms encourages students to apply multiple times if applications are not accepted the first time. She is also happy to work with students during the application process, including providing feedback on applications. Email Mrs. Simms for her input at
