Our HSSD Institutional Law Enforcement Agency has launched a new program for our K--6 students called "U Got Caught!" This initiative allows our law enforcement officers (LEOs) to recognize students in front of their entire class for an act of good character, bravery, kindness, selflessness, or general good judgement. This program is focused on building relationships between our LEOs and young students, and on showing our kids that LEOs at every level are as interested in praising citizens for doing what is right, as they are in protecting the public from and/or punishing wrongdoers.

“The goal is to create more opportunities for our kids to have positive interactions with law enforcement officers,” says Chief Seymour. “Unfortunately, many of our kids only see law enforcement officers when something bad has happened or when someone is in trouble. This program allows us to build relationships with our kids from a young age, and shows them that we are committed to celebrating them and being part of their successes. This is another way for our teachers to acknowledge kids doing great things that might not be recognized by other awards or programs, and it allows them to include us in the process.”

The first recipient of a U Got Caught Award was Connor Gilvin at our Main Street Visual & Performing Arts Magnet School. Connor was recognized for finding someone else’s money on the ground and turning it into his teacher instead of keeping it for himself. HSSD teachers and staff can nominate any students in grades K-6. To nominate a student, staff members simply email Chief Seymour, Officer Langford, or Officer Means with the student’s name and a brief explanation of the reason for a U Got Caught Award. One of our officers then personally visits the student to provide positive feedback, and then makes a presentation in front of the entire class of an official U Got Caught card and a surprise treat.
