Third grade teachers at our Gardner STEM brainstormed as a team to devise a classroom activity that could create encouragement from students to other students. They reasoned that our kids easily forget sometimes that encouragement doesn’t always need to come only from our teachers; it can sometimes mean more if it comes from peers.

In Ms. Sierocuk’s class, they discussed as a group examples of positive comments that can help spread kindness. She took her class to an outdoor classroom area. Students created sheets for themselves, and then all students traded sheets with others and wrote positive messages for each individual. She encouraged them to use their own perspectives and their own words to communicate short affirmations. Ms. Sierocuk points out that many students were so proud of what others thought about them, and many were even surprised to learn about characteristics that they didn’t know they had.

This lesson illustrated first hand how powerful kind words can be in building relationships, and in increasing personal growth. The teacher team created this activity based on the sharing of positive affirmations among staff members at the beginning of the school year. Across the HSSD, the sharing of positive affirmations is part of the Capturing Kids Hearts initiative - which provides strategies and guidelines for enhancing student learning through strong relationships.
