Our Hot Springs Junior Academy students in Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) classes have worked over a series of weeks to learn the skills necessary for designing, planning/budgeting, and preparing healthy meals. JAG Facilitator Mrs. Goodman invited the new Chartwells Mobile Teaching Cart to her classes, so that students could be part of a hands-on demonstration in healthy meal preparation. Today and Monday, students are shopping with a $25 budget at the Albert Pike WalMart, and will purchase items to take home with them and prepare a meal for their families.

After watching a demonstration by Chartwells, JAG students worked with Mrs. Goodman to complete worksheets to help them fully plan out a healthy meal. Each student created a list with specific measurements, food items necessary to fulfill a full meal, and prices for each item (including tax). They worked as a class to make sure that items selected could be combined and served as a full meal, and that the meal items would total $25.00 during checkout.

Today and Monday, Mrs. Goodman has arranged for students to travel to Wal Mart (via HSSD school bus) alongside chaperones of groups of 4-6 students, and purchase items. Mrs. Goodman and chaperones of staff members and volunteers ensure that students use appropriate behavior and etiquette while grocery shopping, and help students to locate food items and check items off of respective lists as they shop.

To complete the assignment, students will take their purchased food items home and prepare and serve a meal to families. Items selected by students to prepare include fettuccine alfredo, lasagna, enchiladas, burritos, BBQ chicken wrap and salad, spaghetti, salisbury steak, bacon and egg cups, and more. Students were encouraged to build a meal with a main course and side, with a vegetable included, and a dessert selection if the budget allows.

JAG is a unique, skills-focused program that exposes students to life skills, good communication practices, financial literacy, community involvement, and pathways to general understanding of how to identify their own talents. The #HSSD is proud to be among only a few school districts in Arkansas to have a JAG program at the 7th-8th grade level.
