The HSSD is proud to announce that 20 students have received an Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy, which is a national certification that encourages students to pursue biliteracy, honors the skills our students attain, and can be evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers and college admissions offices. The Seal of Biliteracy becomes a permanent honor and skill placed on each student’s transcript. Our HSSD students are among 275 recognized across the state for receiving the Seal as of March, 2019 (see the full list of students across Arkansas, here).  The HSSD is proud to have 11 languages spoken among students in K-12, and the Biliteracy Seal can apply to any language other than English.

“The Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy is a great new offering across Arkansas, and especially to our students at HSSD as the most diverse school district in Garland County. Now, we are not only teaching the value of bilingual abilities, we can also help our students to gain a permanent positive addition to their transcript and resume,” said Hot Springs World Class High School ESOL Facilitator, Mrs. Jennifer Bradley. “Our students who earn this Seal are not only excelling academically, they also represent wonderful collaborators and tutors to new students in the district who struggle with English as a second language. These kids are gaining great life skills in mentoring, leadership, empathy, and teaching. We couldn’t be more proud of them, and we are certain that we have added to the ways in which we are preparing them for careers after they graduate.”

While all Biliteracy Seal programs are very similar according to state standards, our requirements at the HSSD include the following: 1) A proficiency level score in English on standardized tests required by the state of Arkansas for all students; 2) A high score on an International Baccalaureate Language Test or Avant STAMP Language Proficiency Test; and, 3) The completion of a personal essay about how the experience of attaining a Biliteracy Seal has prepared the student for future goals.

The Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy is awarded each spring and fall to students in grades 9-12, and is sponsored by Arkansas Foreign Language Teachers Association and Arkansas Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. It continues as a collaborative effort between both organizations, K-12 teachers, university faculty, and members of the community. In June 2018, the Arkansas State Board of Education officially endorsed the Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy.  Learn more about the Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy, here.
