Congrats to our HSJA JAG Specialist Mrs. Goodman on earning her Lead Professional Educator license. The lead professional educator license is available to educators who aspire to leadership roles, while continuing classroom work. Three years of teaching and a show of classroom effectiveness are prerequisites to applying for professional educator licensure, along with demonstrating competency in leadership.


The Lead Professional Educator License is renewable every five years, as are three others included in the new Education Career Continuum series from the Arkansas Department of Education including: Early Career Professional Educator License, Career Professional Educator License, and the Master Professional Educator License.


Leadership duties for teachers who obtain licensure could entail conducting training sessions with the staff, mentoring, or participating in committee decisions regarding the school or district. For Mrs. Goodman, she has worked with HSJA leadership to focus on three main areas as follows: She will work with teachers to create lesson plans that will help with time management of the 90 minute block, to develop/build classroom management skills, and to help identify and implement strategies to build rapport with all students.


Mrs. Goodman describes the licensure process as follows: “Gaining the Lead Professional Educator license was an online process which I began in August and finished in April.  During the past year I completed four micro-credentials: strategizing for assessment, analyzing student work, planning professional learning and shaping your leadership role. We were paired with a mentor who helped us through each step of the process.  The mentors are educators who walk with you through this journey giving another pair of eyes to look over your work before submission. Once your work for the micro-credential was complete you would submit it for approval. In order for one to be accepted it would have to meet ‘demonstrated’ on the rubric.”


For others interested in the process, Mrs. Goodman describes why she was interested in earning the LPE License: “This license is about leading without leaving...this is really what this process allows teachers to do. I do not have a desire to become an administrator but I do desire to be a lead in my building and my district. This Lead Professional Educator license does just that for me.  It gives me opportunities to lead without leaving the classroom. There is hope that districts will recognize and compensate this accomplishment by the individuals who take the time and dedication to further their passion to lead others.”
