Each year, the HSSD proudly honors a Teacher of the Year for each of our schools, and a Teacher of the Year for the entire district. At each school, teachers may nominate peers for the award. Nominees then provide information about their work as an educator, and submit it to the leadership team at each school. A Teacher of the Year is then selected by the school leadership team at each school from all nominees. Each Teacher of the Year (7 total) is then considered for the HSSD Teacher of the Year by an outside committee of community members. The HSSD Teacher of the Year will be announced on May 24.

For Teacher Appreciation Week, we are proud to celebrate each Teacher of the Year at all 7 of our HSSD schools with unique stories about their background and their contribution to our world class students.

Learn more about Gardner STEM Magnet School Teacher of the Year Lorri Saracini:

What year, and where did you start teaching?

“I actually did my student teaching (that's what they used to call internships) at Jones School, in 1980-81. I started teaching in 1981; my first year I taught at St. John's.”

How many years have you taught at the HSSD?

“This is my 37th year in HSSD.”

Why do you love your job?

“I love making a difference in a students' life by changing their attitude about school; about learning; math in particular, or by exposing them to something they might not  know anything about. That's why I do robotics.”

What makes you most proud of the HSSD, and why?

“I'm proud that students, from all circumstances, can fit in somewhere.  A student doesn't need to fit a certain mold to find their place, if they just look and take an interest.”

What is the one thing that you hope MOST to teach your students?

“ If my students will remember that I had high expectations that they were able to meet; I hope, then, that they will have higher expectations of themselves.”
