The HSSD ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Program has launched a new family outreach initiative this fall to personally connect with ESOL families across the district.  ESOL staff have teamed up with guest speaker Cristiam Espinoza- Madrid, a bilingual licensed professional counselor, to offer evening outreach classes at each school. Classes are one hour and include an overview of school information and resources, as well as emotional support, parenting strategies, and other discussion regarding the difficulty of a transition period from one culture to another.

“Families face many challenges when they join a different culture, especially when there are language barriers. We focus in these sessions on challenges and solutions specific to families with cultural and language challenges, in the context of raising children and helping them to be successful. We hope these evening events continue to expand our ESOL offerings at HSSD by building stronger relationships with entire families,” says District ESOL Coordinator Melissa Bratton.

The first ESOL Parent Outreach session took place on 11/6 at Park Magnet School, and was a success. ESOL staff members are working to make each session better than the last by improving and adding to information based on expressed needs and questions by parents and other family members.  The next is planned for Oaklawn Visual and Performing Arts on 11/27 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. HSSD takes pride in being the most diverse district in Garland County, and works hard to provide services, resources, and programs that are specific to the needs of a diverse array of student and parent needs.
