Every year, the HSSD proudly honors a Teacher of the Year for each of our schools. Teachers are nominated for the honor by their peers. The leadership team at each school asks those nominated to submit information about their work as an educator, and carefully reviews all responses before selecting the annual Teacher of the Year.

All six HSSD Teachers of the Year are then considered interviewed for the HSSD District Teacher of the Year by an outside committee of community members. Join us in celebrating each of our Teachers of the Year by hearing from all six outstanding educators in interviews and videos provided here. The 2020 HSSD District Teacher of the Year will be announced on Friday, May 29.

Congratulations to Marissa Burton, Park Magnet Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Burton has been changing lives as an educator for nine years at the Hot Springs School District. She currently teaches kindergarten at our Park Magnet, an IB World School.

Why did you become a teacher?

“When I was little, I ‘played’ school with my toys. I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a teacher. I have always looked up to my teachers, especially my elementary school teachers. I became a teacher so that I could help students feel successful and grow to love learning just like my teachers did for me.”

What is your favorite/most inspiring story about your career in teaching?
It is hard to pick just one favorite moment in my teaching career. My favorite part of teaching is when I see my students learning and when they are able to apply what they have learned. Also, I love when parents share with me how much they have seen their child learn and grow. That always makes me feel inspired!”

If you could give one message to your students, that you hope they remember above all other things that you've taught them, what would it be?
I always want my students to be curious, ask questions, and to know they are loved!”
