For the 13th year, more than 3,000 Garland County students in 3rd-6th grade experienced an outstanding performance by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra thanks to the Hot Springs/Hot Springs Village Symphony Guild. The annual ASO performance takes place at the Hot Springs Convention Center Bank OZK Arena and is free to all students. The 2019 theme Symphony Safari was a huge success (as the concerts always are), and included pieces meant to create a sense of adventure, movement, and connectedness to nature and geography. New this year, the performance included a narrator and direct student involvement in determining the outcomes of each situation, amid a series of chases, escapes, and pathways. Students clapped, answered questions, and were involved in decision making, by way of the narrator and conductor.

The Guild partners with Arkansas Learning Through The Arts (ALTTA) to create complementary curriculum for the music chosen at each performance, which includes a Student Journal and a Teacher’s Guide with a DVD of the music and  illustrative graphics. Curriculum materials focused heavily on social science, social studies, geography, and literacy skills to prepare for the Symphony Safari debut in Garland County.

Students and staff members at the HSSD are deeply appreciative to the Hot Springs/Hot Springs Village Symphony Guild for coordinating and helping to sponsor this opportunity for our kids. This is a rich, wonderful musical experience for our students. We also thank the memorable Arkansas Symphony Orchestra for sharing their talent with our Hot Springs families!
