Second grade students at our Oaklawn Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School completed an “I Have a Dream” assignment modeled after Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Mrs. Avery read books focused on the life and work of MLK to her students and then assigned them the task of identifying a dream of their own, that could bring positive change. Students used their writing time to create artwork from their own experiences and opinions to communicate their own dreams for future change.

Moving examples of their inspiring, creative work includes:

“I have a DREAM that … every kid in every country would get a chance to go to school.”

“I have a DREAM that … there would be a cure for cystic fibrosis for my brother.”

“I have a DREAM that … people would stop owning guns.”

“I have a DREAM that … I can create a safe place for stray animals to life and play while they get good homes.”

“I have a DREAM that … I could open a food store for the homeless from foods that people donate.”

“I have a DREAM that … people around the world would have access to clean water to drink.”

“I have a DREAM that … everybody would stop smoking.”

The dreams of all students is paired with a photo of each of them in a “We Have a Dream” display outside of Mrs. Avery’s classroom. Their work is inspiring to us all!
