Oaklawn Visual & Performing Arts Magnet School
Mathematics

The math curriculum consists of "Investigations in Number, Data, and Space" for kindergarten through fifth grade supplemented with other resources to provide a hands-on approach and develop critical thinking skills. Students are engaged in math problem solving activities to intensify higher order thinking. Math Focus teachers provide enrichment for above grade level students twice a week. Pre-Algebra concepts are taught using Hands-on-Equations. These specialists also work with identified At-risk students in an effort to raise skill levels.

Kindergarten
Number sense, symbols, measurement, shapes, graphs, probability and mathematical reasoning. The curriculum will be integrated by using manipulatives, language, and written skills.

First Grade
Counting, grouping, place value, estimation, problem solving, measurement, and operations using writing, technology, manipulatives, and computation. Sort, classify, describe, model, draw, and construct shapes in multiple dimensions. Demonstrate spatial and geometric awareness in the real world through written and oral communication. Apply the concept of comparison and select appropriate mathematical tools.

Second Grade
Understand number sense and develop meaning for the operations by modeling and discussing a variety of problem situations. Develop the concept of basic place value, number relationships in addition, subtraction, and simple multiplication. Sort, classify, and compare geometric shapes as well as demonstrate, describe and compare fractions as related to parts of the whole. Estimate and measure real world objects. Collect and analyze data through a variety of formats.

Third Grade
Place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Exploration of geometric shapes, fractions, perimeter, area, algebraic expressions, and probability. Solve real world problems with written explanations.

Fourth Grade
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractional numbers are used to count and solve problems. Multi-digit multiplication and division are introduced; work continues and expands on fractions, decimals, factoring, graphing, and using variables in simple sentences. Problem solving is emphasized. Geometry units encompass the study of different types of rectangles, triangles, and angles, and the computation of area and perimeter. Ability grouped centers are utilized to provide small group skill focused learning.
