Oaklawn
Visual & Performing Arts Magnet School
Instrumental Music Department
The Instrumental Music Department at Oaklawn Magnet School is an exciting place to learn and create music. Through hard work and perseverance students from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade learn to produce wonderful sound through instruments. Students not only learn how to read and perform, they learn how to write and record their own music. This is accomplished in the Music Technology lab where students use computers and keyboards to print their own compositions, lay their own sound tracks and record their performances. Not only are State and National Music standards met, they are exceeded.
The benefits of Instrumental Music studies are well documented. Data collected by educational testing services, which provide college entrance examinations, indicate a strong connection between test scores and instrumental study. Verbal and mathematic test scores of high school seniors are significantly higher for those students who have had seven or more years of instrumental study.
