Title 1

What is Title 1?

Title 1 is a program that provides federal funding to our school:

Originally Title 1 was part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.
Originally Title 1 was intended to provide financial assistance to schools to meet the special needs of educationally deprived children.
Originally Title 1 was designed to serve only students who were working below their grade level in the areas of Reading and Math.

How Has Title 1 changed?

In 1994, Congress enacted The Improving American's Schools Act and changed Title 1 in the following ways:

Currently Title 1 is designed to help school provide a high-quality education for every child!
Currently title 1 funds can be used throughout an entire school- or "schoolwide"!
Currently Title 1 funds help a school to do more for all students in the school!

How Does a School Receive Title 1 Funds?

The federal government provides funding to each state each year for Title 1 programs. The Arkansas Department of Education determines the amount of Title 1 funding that Hot Springs School District will receive each year based on a formula that includes the number of children from low income families who reside in our district.

When the Hot Springs School District receives this funding, we are then responsible for providing services to students on the basis of educational need rather than family income.

What Does Title 1 Really Do at Langston Magnet?

Provides salaries for Langston's Instructional Facilitator (Laura Baber) and Instructional Assistants (Leslie Balliette, Carolyn Boyette, Vickie Bulfone, Patsy Free, and Cheryl Poole).
Provides salary for the district Parent Coordinator (Patricia Moore).
Provides salary and materials for a teacher and assistant (Darla Shelley and J.D. Hazelwood) to serve students with limited English.
Provides salary for a teacher (Bernice Lowrey) for Langston's Science Lab.
Provides funds to purchase instructional materials and resources for teachers at Langston to use in their classrooms.
Provides funds for activities at Langston that involve parents.
Provides salaries for additional Extended Day and Early Bird Reading Club staff at Langston.
Provides funds for Langston to purchase instructional programs (example: Accelerated Reader and S.T.A.R. programs).
Provides funds for Langston to purchase some pieces of equipment for us in the school's instructional program (example: computers and equipment for the n-house cable system).
Provides funds for additional training for Langston teachers and staff.
