Math Problem of the Day or Week
Kindergarten through 5th grade classes have scheduled math lab times twice a month. In the math lab the focus is on higher level thinking skills, which are modeled and practiced. Students have the opportunity to explore math problems using a variety of techniques and strategies.
Preparation for standardized testing is a key component of the Math curriculum. Fourth and fifth grade students work a "Problem of the Day" to prepare them for the type of questions that they will encounter during testing. Kindergarten through third grade students work a "Problem of the Week" as part of their preparation for testing. As part of the "Problem of the Day" or "Problem of the Week" students are responsible for explaining their answers to the problem through sentences, drawings, or charts. The problems are checked by the math focus teach using a scale similar to the rubric that is used on the fourth grade benchmark exam.
