Environmental Theme

Utilizing the scientific process in a naturalistic setting, the environmental studies program emphasizes students' critical thinking and problem solving skills.  Students have the opportunity to explore various branches of science in real-life settings, including the unique geological structure of the Langston area.  Program participants will utilize program specific instruments in a wide range of uses in the environmental science lab.

Langston's environmental focus this year is to teach the students how to reduce the amount of paper trashed, and increase the amount of paper that is recycled. This allows our faculty and students to promote a cleaner campus.  A grant received from Weyerhaeuser by our science lab teacher, Bernice Lowrey, has enabled students and faculty to be successful.

Last year's focus was to help those across the globe that were affected by the tsunami.  As the students studied the tsunami effects they collected money for books they read, and then donated the money to The International Heifer Project. The students were promised that our principal would get on the roof dressed as a pig if they collected $2000.00 which they did with the support of a local Wal*Mart. Then students visited The International Heifer Village.  The culminating event was Langston's earth Day Program presented to family, friends and community.

Locally Langston Magnet was chosen as the Campus of the Year by the Hot Springs/Garland County Beautification Commission, and continues to work closely with the organization.  During the school year Langston has been chosen as the campus of the month several times.  Our entire school did an in-depth study of solid waste and recycling practices during the week of Earth DayStudents bought an acre of land in Brazil at the Pantanal National Park and an acre of land in the Dominican Republic at the Parque National Este.

Also through out the year several guests from the forestry service, Beautification Commission, Birds of Prey, Hot Springs Fire Department, Exotic Animals, and ABC Affiliate Channel 7 weathermen spoke to the students as they presented various environmental programs.

Last year the fourth grade students retuned to the University of Southern Mississippi's Sea Camp  at Biloxi for the fifth year.  The students did various types of experiments in the water and attended classes at the aquarium located on site.  The students then went to Ship Island to search for shells, shark teeth, and watch the dolphins along side the boat trip.
