Geocaching, The Educational Hobby For All Ages

descriptionofpresentation:

Geocaching is a hobby that enables participants of all ages to enjoy a "treasure hunt" in their own neighborhood. Geocaching utilizes GPS technology and a handheld GPS to search for "treasures" hidden by other hobbyists. The hobby connects the obvious educational value of experience with GPS to the fun of exploring Arkansas.
Participants in the workshop will learn the basics of Geocaching and become familiar with GPS operation. Participants will receive their own GPS as part of the registration fee.

Using Online Databases To Teach Arkansas History

descriptionofpresentation:

The Butler Center for Arkansas Studies has launched searchable database of digitized oral histories, demographic maps of Arkansas race relations since 1957, and revised lesson plans based on new ADE frameworks. The Butler Center's Online Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture was launched in 2006 and updates have been numerous since then. The presenter will demonstrate how Arkansas history teachers can use these technology tools to meet the state mandates for this subject. The session has been designed to be used as the two hour Arkansas History Staff Development Credit teachers need annually.

Additionalcomments:

It takes about an hour each to demonstrate each database. If these sessions need to be split because of conference program planning, I can work with that. This could be a three hour technology integration workshop if teachers had access to computer lab for guided practice.

Additionalcomments:

If Becky Hart, or someone else is going to do a session like this, just drop this one! I just think a "basic" session on Web 2.0 terms, etc. is important, whether I do it or someone else. You won't hurt my feelings by not accepting this one. If needed, I'll try to bring a projector, if Mahoney will loan me one. Diane

Lessons in Wireless for K-12 Schools

descriptionofpresentation:

The increased use of computers in K-12 schools has created network demands that seem to be readily addressed by a wireless LAN. However, schools must be certain the system they implement allows easy installation and management, superior scalability, long-term investment protection, and robust security for the air, the network, the users and the data.

TIE - Technology Infused Education

descriptionofpresentation:

Discover the TIE project’s impact on educational technology in Arkansas. A statewide EETT grant was written to fund a technology cadre that does training at local service centers. Each service center recommended two teachers to become cadre members. The cadre receives training on content, presentation skills and networking opportunities. All technology modules are developed by teachers for teachers. These project based modules ensure consistency in technology offerings statewide. Modules are housed on the TIE website along with discussion boards, lesson plans or exemplary projects. Come get a preview of what is happening in tech labs in Arkansas.
