Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade Lesson Plans:

Kindergarten – Second Grade Lesson Plans

Students in grades K-2 will be given an introductory lesson for the use of Microsoft PowerPoint.  This is the program selected for participation in the Technology Inclusion Projects for grade K-2 for the 3rd Nine Weeks.  The next program being used is PhotoStory as well as the possible use of digital cameras.  The students will take the pictures they created the past two weeks using Microsoft Paint and place them into a PowerPoint presentation this week.  This will be used next class session to create a PhotoStory.

*Kindergarten will be doing a “Poem Illustration Project” – Students will illustrate a line of a poem using Paint.  The illustrations will be placed in PowerPoint slides containing the line of the poem.  The PowerPoint will be transferred to PhotoStory and each student will use a microphone to narrate their line of the poem.

*First Grade will be doing “I’m an Author Project” – Students will draw (inPaint) a picture of a topic that will be placed in PowerPoint.  The students will type a sentence or sentences about the topic and their picture.

*Second Grade will be doing “The Important Thing About…. Project” – Students will create two PowerPoint slides (found in a template) writing about something important to them.  They will include a picture from Paint or a camera (using digital cameras to take the picture).

PowerPoint Lesson:

Students will be introduced to the Microsoft PowerPoint Program.  We will begin with what the icon looks like and how to locate and open the program.

Students will begin by clicking on the "Start" button and progressing to "All Programs" where we will search for "PowerPoint".

Once the program is open, students will learn how to create a new program.

We will then work on inserting the pictures they created last session using Microsoft Paint into their PowerPoint presentation today.

(I will then take their individual presentation slides and place them into ONE presentation for their - group in Kindergarten and First and for their class in second grade.  The class projects will be completed using a template the teacher will have created for the students to use in PowerPoint, bypassing the necessity of compiling their individual slides as I am doing in the lab lesson.)

*Kindergarten will be doing a “Poem Illustration Project” – Students will illustrate a line of a poem using PaintThese will be saved in their network folder for later practice for their final project.

*First Grade will be doing “I’m an Author Project” – Students will draw (in Paint) a picture of a topic they are given.  These will be saved in their network folder for later practice for their final project.

*Second Grade will be doing “The Important Thing About…. Project” – Students will create a picture in Paint of something that is important to them.  These will be saved in their network folder for later practice for their final project.

Performance Indicators

A major component of the NETS Project is the development of a general set of profiles describing technology-literate students at key developmental points in their pre-college education. These profiles reflect the underlying assumption that all students should have the opportunity to develop technology skills that support learning, personal productivity, decision making, and daily life. These profiles and associated standards provide a framework for preparing students to be lifelong learners who make informed decisions about the role of technology in their lives.

Prior to completion of Grade 2, students will:

  1. Use input devices (e.g., mouse, keyboard, remote control) and output devices (e.g., monitor, printer) to successfully operate computers, VCRs, audiotapes, and other technologies. (1)
  2. Use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and independent learning activities. (1, 3)
  3. Communicate about technology using developmentally appropriate and accurate terminology. (1)
  4. Use developmentally appropriate multimedia resources (e.g., interactive books, educational software, elementary multimedia encyclopedias) to support learning. (1)
  5. Work cooperatively and collaboratively with peers, family members, and others when using technology in the classroom. (2)
  6. Demonstrate positive social and ethical behaviors when using technology. (2)

  1. Practice responsible use of technology systems and software. (2)
  2. Create developmentally appropriate multimedia products with support from teachers, family members, or student partners. (3)
  3. Use technology resources (e.g., puzzles, logical thinking programs, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools) for problem solving, communication, and illustration of thoughts, ideas, and stories. (3, 4, 5, 6)

Numbers in parentheses following each performance indicator refer to the standards category to which the performance is linked. The categories are:

  1. Basic operations and concepts
  2. Social, ethical, and human issues
  3. Technology productivity tools
  4. Technology communications tools
  5. Technology research tools
  6. Technology problem-solving and decision-making tools
