Computer Basics: Culminating Lesson

In this session students will review the parts of the computer and identify the screen, keyboard, mouse, tower, and headphones.  They will also use the program Kid Pix Deluxe 3 to demonstrate their abilities to open a program, type their name on the screen, and close a program.

The students will receive a "Computer Driver's License" and a "Certificate of Completion" for the Unit: TECHNOBasics.

Materials:

·        KidPix Deluxe 3

·        KidPix Deluxe 3 Flashcards

 Awards Earned for the Unit:

1.     Student’s Computer Driver’s License

2.     Certificate of Achievement

Lesson Summary:

Kindergarten  

 Any students in each class who didn't do the test last session need to show they can name the parts of the computer and can type their name. The students will work with KidPix Delux 3 during the class time to allow time for testing those students. The test sheets and "Drive's license" papers will need to go home with the students this week.

 Students who were out last session due to Staff Development Day will need to also discuss the activity sheets on “Input and Output.”  We will do the activities together as a group and then send the papers home to share with their parents.

1st Grade

 Students will use the Kidspiration Program this week. I want them to see some of the uses for it and learn how to do some of the activities. Starting with a guided activity:

Select "Reading and Writing" Click OK

Choose "Real or Make Believe”

Click on the Icon for "Student Name" (Looks like two kids on the tool bar)

Type in their Name and click where they want it on the paper

Move the graphics to the correct section on the page

When they are finished, save the activity to their folder on the network:

Click File

Choose Save

Click on the down arrow:

Choose “Data on ‘gardner’ (F:)”

Choose 00 gardner classes

Choose 00 Gardner Projects

Select First Grade

Choose Their Teacher's name

Select Their Name

Choose "Technology Projects"

Choose 1^st grade

Type in the file name “Real”

Click on Save

When they have completed the activity, if time allows they can print the activity.

2nd Grade

 Students will use the Kidspiration Program this week. I want them to see some of the uses for it and learn how to do some of the activities. Starting with a guided activity:

Select "Reading and Writing"

Click OK

Choose "All About Me"

Click OK

Click on the Icon for "Student Name" (Looks like two kids on the tool bar)

Type in their Name and click where they want it on the paper

Have the students add pictures for each section – they can add 1-3 graphics for each section:

Me - a graphic to represent themselves

School - graphic of something they like to do at school

Things I like - graphics of things they like

Things I don't like - graphics of things they DO NOT like

Things I'm Good At - graphics of things they are good at doing or playing

Home - graphics of something they would find or enjoy about being at home

 If it looks like they will have time, they can click on the writing tool and then add sentences to tell about their pictures. This is something the kids who are faster could go ahead and work on while others are still trying to add graphics.

When time is about up, save the activity to their folder on the network:

Click File

Choose Save

Click on the down arrow

Select Second Grade

Choose Their Teacher's name

Select Their Name

Choose "Technology Projects"
