Student Web Sites & Electronic Portfolios

Students in grades 3-5 have missed several Technology Lab Rotations due to Benchmark and ITBS testing.  This week will be used to continue work on projects we have started earlier and never completely finished.  We will be working on Student Web Sites in preparation for including them as the technology portion of their Electronic Portfolios.  Students will also work on editing their Electronic Portfolios as time allows.

 Overview of Web Site Portion of the Lesson:          In this lesson, students will work with Microsoft FrontPage.  They will create the pages they are linking to from their Homepage for their Personal Web Site:
 

Students in 3rd Grade will have their link to a page about themselves;
 

Students in 4th & 5th Grades will have the following linked pages -  1) About Me, 2) About My Family, 3) About Gardner Magnet School, and 4) My Interests

Learning Objectives:  Students will be able to –

  • Locate and open Microsoft FrontPage
  • Create additional pages for their personal web site
  • Save their pages to their “Web Page” folder in their personal folders on the server
  • Add Hyperlinks from their Homepage to their sub pages

Materials Used: 

  • Microsoft FrontPage
  • Internet Explorer
  • School Network and Server
  • Google.com (if time allows for locating backgrounds and graphics)

·        Gardner Network Folders

·        Microsoft PowerPoint

·        Portfolio Template (K – new template in main folder, 1-5 Personalized Template Saved in individualized folders from the previous year)

Students will begin by creating a new page in Microsoft FrontPage:

  1. Click “File” from the top tool bar
  2. Click on “New” and select “Page or Web”
  3. Choose “Blank Page”
  4. Follow these steps as you create each of your additional pages
  5. Follow the individual steps below for each of the additional pages you are to create

Students will work create the following new pages:

Grades 3-5 Begin with a page “All About Me….”

All About Me....

1.     From the top Tool Bar, click on "Insert"

2.     Next, click on "Picture"

3.     Then, click on "Word Art"

4.     Type in the title you chose for this page

Text about you goes on this page

1.     From the top Tool Bar, click on "Open"
(You may have to click on the double arrows pointing down
to see the entire list of options for this tool…. Or if you click
and wait a few seconds, the rest of the list will appear for you to view)

2.     Next, click on "Down Arrow"

  1. Click on “data on 'gardner' (F:)” and press “Enter” on the keyboard
  2. Click on “00-gardner classes” and press “Enter” on the keyboard
  3. Click on “00 Student Projects” and press “Enter” on the keyboard
  4. Click on (your grade level) and press “Enter” on the keyboard
  5. Click on (your teacher) and press “Enter” on the keyboard
  6. Click on (your name) from the list and press “Enter” on the keyboard
  7. Click on “Web Page” and press “Enter” on the keyboard
  8. Click on (your grade level) and press “Enter” on the keyboard
  9. Click on the “down arrow” at the bottom of the screen under “FILE NAME”
  10. Choose “All Files”
  11. Select the “Worksheet” for your web page and click “Open”
  12. Once the page is open, you will need to click the LOCK on the tool bar
    (This will unlock the Form so you can work with the text on the page.)
  13. Select and highlight all of the paragraph you typed on the worksheet
  14. Make sure you click on “B” and “U” in the tool bar to de-select any bold or underlines you have on the worksheet version before we copy for the next step
  15. Copy the text by using: a)Edit Copy, b)Right Click and choose COPY, or
    c) use the ctrl key + C
  16. Click on the “Microsoft FrontPage” tab at the bottom of your screen to return to your web page work in FrontPage
  17. Paste the paragraph you just copied:  a)Edit Paste, b)Right Click and choose PASTE, or
    c) use the ctrl key + V
  18. You will need to delete the text “FORMTEXT”
  19. Spell Check your writing:  a) Tools – Spelling and Grammar  or  b) the “F7” key
  20. At the bottom of your page, you will need to type:
    Go Back to “Name’s” Homepage
    Add a HYPERLINK by clicking and highlighting the text you just typed
  21. Hold down the “ctrl” key + “K”
  22. Choose your homepage as the hyperlink

 

Grades 4-5 continue with a page “About My Family….”

About My Awesome Family....

  1. Click “File” from the top tool bar
  2. Click on “New” and select “Page or Web”
  3. Choose “Blank Page”

4.     From the top Tool Bar, click on "Insert"

5.     Next, click on "Picture"

6.     Then, click on "Word Art"

7.     Type in the title you chose for this page

8.     Follow the steps for copying the written work from your FORM
using the information about your family to paste on this page

 

 Grades 4-5 continue with a page “About Gardner Magnet School….”

  1. Click “File” from the top tool bar
  2. Click on “New” and select “Page or Web”
  3. Choose “Blank Page”

12.  From the top Tool Bar, click on "Insert"

13.  Next, click on "Picture"

14.  Then, click on "Word Art"

15.  Type in the title you chose for this page

16.  Follow the steps for copying the written work from your FORM
using the information about Gardner Magnet School to paste on this page

 

Grades 4-5 continue with a page “My Hobbies and Interests….”

  1. Click “File” from the top tool bar
  2. Click on “New” and select “Page or Web”
  3. Choose “Blank Page”

20.  From the top Tool Bar, click on "Insert"

21.  Next, click on "Picture"

22.  Then, click on "Word Art"

23.  Type in the title you chose for this page

24.  Follow the steps for copying the written work from your FORM
using the information about Your Hobbies and Interests to paste on this page

Save your work and exit the program! 

 

 Overview of Electronic Portfolio Portion of the Lesson:         

3rd 4th and 5th Grade ~

The students will locate and open their portfolio on the network.  Below are the steps they should follow if anyone should need assistance.

Click Start
Choose “My Computer”
Choose “Data on ‘gardner’ (F:)”
Choose “00 gardner classes”
Choose “00 Student Projects”
Select “their grade level”
Choose Their Teacher's name
Select Their Name
Choose "My Portfolio"
Open Their Portfolio (PowerPoint Presentation)

Students will continue to edit their portfolio.  They will work on adding audio files and photos, changing dates on slides, and correcting any errors from the previous year to their portfolios.  Students may also work on editing color, background, font, etc. for their portfolio to make it more personal.  Once they have completed the editing for the session, they will need to save their work:

Click on the “red X” in the top right corner of the screen
Click “Yes” to save the changes
Click on the “red X” to exit out of the network folder window to return to the original screen
