Kindergarten, First and Second Grade Lesson Plans:

Acorn Pond

Materials:

·        FutureKids Curriculum ~ Gray Level Lesson 1

·        Sammy's Science House Software

Lesson Summary:

Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade Classes

The students will explore part-to-whole relationships, and strengthen and develop listening and visual comprehension strategies as they identify tools that animals use.

Acorn Pond

We will begin with a review of the technology tools we used last lesson in Kid Pix Deluxe 3.  Then make the connection to animals and their use of things in their environment that help them to live.  Many animals even have their own built-in tools, such as claws, sharp teeth or wings, that enable them to eat, build homes or move around.  We will continue investigations of tools by studying an animal habitat.  The habitat we will study is called Acorn Pond from Sammy's Science House software.

Begin the lesson by launching Sammy's Science House and enter the Acorn Pond activity by clicking the window behind Sammy.

Discuss what they see - a springtime setting at Acorn Pond.

Allow students time to explore Acorn Pond.  See the other seasons at the pond.  Then, return to springtime for our activity.

Click on the red cardinal followed by clicking on the "Open Field Notebook" to learn more about what materials cardinals use to make their nests.  Use the arrows in the field notebook to view information about other animals.  When time is up for exploration, click on the "Close Field Notebook" button.

After a few minutes, students will select the "Olivia the Owl" frame to hear a question about one of the pond animals.  Click an animal to answer the question.  The students should study the animals and their environments closely as they continue to answer Olivia's questions.

Finally, students will name some of the animals that they discovered at Acorn Pond.  Discuss how the animals used the different items in their environments as well as other facts about the animals.

Exit the program - and review the lesson.

Introduce the lesson for next visit... Creating their own technology robots using Kid Pix Deluxe 3.
