Week 23

Mr. Miller's Duty This Week:
Bus Duty - Friday
2:50-3:50

Kindergarten, First and Second Grade Lesson Plans:

Exploration of Software

NOTE:  The students will be allowed time this week to revisit or learn new software.  It is a time of exploration.  This is an opportunity for the students to experience the computer as a fun learning tool aside from the pre-designed and structured lessons typically completed in the lab setting.
The software programs they are exploring are ones that will be used later in the year to complete structured lessons.  This week is similar to the belief that students need to have exploration time with any hands-on manipulative they will be using to familiarize themselves with the tool and learn what it can do in a non-structured “play” time before continuing on to a structured and organized progression of learning with the tool.

Materials:

·        Thinkin’ Things 1 Software

·        KidPix Deluxe 3 Software

Lesson Summary:

Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade Classes

Kindergarten ~ The students will locate the icon “Thinkin’ Things 1” on the “Start” menu and open the program.

Click Start
Choose “All Programs”
Choose “Edmark”
Choose “Thinkin’ Things 1”
Choose “Thinkin’ Things 1”

Students will then begin to explore the software and the skill activities it offers:

Oranga – Patterning skills: creating and/or repeating musical patterns demonstrated by Oranga as he plays his drum set.
Toony Loon - Patterning skills: creating and/or repeating musical patterns demonstrated by the Toony Loon as he plays his xylophone.  Students may also select the type of xylophone the music is played upon.
The Fribble Shop – students used their skills of deduction to select the “fribble” that meets the list of attributes given by the “shopper” at the fribble shop by phone, fax, or in person at the shop’s door.
Make a Feathered Friend – students create the missing “feathered friend” by solving the pattern of birds given OR they can create feathered friends of their own design in the random choice mode.
Musical Pattern OR Shapes – students can create patters or shapes to move in rhythm to the music they select from the program, they may also create artwork using shapes that will move with the music.

1st & 2nd Grade ~

The students will locate the icon for “Kid Pix Deluxe 3” on their monitor and open the program.

Description:  Kid Pix Deluxe 3 is a tool for enhancing learning in all curriculum areas.  The features are very user friendly.  The program offers realistic art tools and photo editing with Electric Mixer effects to inspire students to create and enrich the learning process by making it more fun and exciting.  There are hundreds of flags, maps, backgrounds, and activity and SlideShow starters.  Students can insert art, text, and sounds into their multimedia presentation.  It can be fully installed on the computer’s hard drive eliminating the need for the CD to be loaded each time.  The program comes with a teacher’s resource binder that includes 30 adaptable cross-curricular lesson plans, a resource CD-ROM with samples and project templates, tips and productivity activities and student tutorials, a curriculum matrix, a rubber stamp index, and resource lists.  This is a program that the students love to use.

Students in grades 1 and 2 may also select to use the program “Thinkin’ Things 1” if they would like to do so instead of “Kid Pix Deluxe 3” for this week’s instruction time.
