Introduction of Unit 2 - World Wildlife: Orange
PC Lesson Two - Part One.
Description
of the Unit:
In
World Wildlife, the second of five units, the children use a
database application to identify and locate an animal missing from the
World Wildlife Zoo. They are introduced to basic database
functions in the first lesson as they sort a list of zoo animals.
In the lessons that follow, they enter information into new records, and
format database tables and forms. By filtering these accumulated
data, they discover why the animal escaped and determine where to locate
it. In the process, the students use their desktop publishing
skills to create a MISSING! poster and a newsletter reporting the
animal's safe return to the zoo.
Lesson Two ~
After transferring data from a desktop publishing document to a database
table, the students will organize the table by labeling fields and
sorting records. They will also perform a filter and register the
penguin as a missing animal by adding its information to the table.
Finally, they will design a MISSING! Poster to help begin the search for
the missing penguin.
Materials
~
-
Microsoft Publisher 2000
-
Microsoft Access 2000
Opening ~ Review Lesson One, including how to sort a
database table, view the table in Datasheet View and Form View, and
complete a diagram in the desktop publishing program. Remind teh
children that they used both the database table and diagram to determine
the identity of the animal missing from the World Wildlife Zoo.
Discuss times they have lost
something. For example, did you ever lose a book or a jacket?
What actions did you take to locate the missing item? Have you
ever used or seen a MISSING! sign posted when something was lost such as
a family pet?
This lesson will have you
reporting a missing zoo animal by netering its information in a registry
of missing animals. Then you will design a MISSING! poster
identifying the animal and indicating where to return it if it is found.
