This week we will continue Unit 2 - World Wildlife: Pink PC with lesson three.

Description of the Unit:  In World Wildlife, the second of five units, the children are introduced to database skills as they help with the opening of the World Wildlife Zoo.  The pupils complete a map of the zoo, create a sign with different types of animals, arrange colorful patterns on snakes, organize zoo workers into team, analyze new zoo creatures and sort zoo souvenirs.  in the process, the students classify objects according to attributes, arrange data in patterns, and organize data by sorting, grouping, ordering, and using axes.  Then they research animals by using a multimedia encyclopedia and explore various zoo Web sites by using the Internet.

Lesson Three ~  To learn about repeating-sequence patterns, the students apply their desktop publishing skills while completing a sign with colorful snakes.  The students discriminate object attributes by linking blocks together to create snakes.

  Materials ~

  • Print Artist 15.0

  • Tabletop Jr.

Opening ~  Review Lesson 2.  Remind the students that we used Tabletop Jr. to complete the sign for the World Wildlife Zoo by organizing graphics of animals.  Remember that we grouped the animals by color.

Ask the students if they know what the term pattern means, and explain that a pattern is a design which repeats itself over and over.  Point out some patterns in the room and in the students' clothing.  Talk about the patterns we find on animals like the zebra and tiger.

Introduce that today we will create a sign for the World Wildlife Zoo displaying snakes with colorful patterns.

Steps Covered in the Lesson ~

  • Introduce the activity

  • Launch Print Artist 15.0

  • Introduce and discuss the activity and the pattern of the snakes

  • Review how to move an object by clicking and dragging

  • Move the shapes to complete the patterns started on the snakes on the sign

  • Create a border for the sign using the "Auto Shapes" tool

  • Insert diamond shapes, resize them, and place them along the sides of the sign (making use of the copy and paste tools)

  • Use the color palette to color the diamonds on the left side of the page and repeat for the pattern on the right side of the page

  • Save the sign

  • Exit the program

  • Launch Tabletop Jr. and open the snakes.ttj template

  • Discuss the attribute blocks

  • Select "Link Up"

  • Link the blocks with similar attributes on the page

  • Once you have linked the blocks to form a snake, you can click and drag the first shape around the screen to see it move like a snake

  • Save the file

  • Exit the program

  • Review the lesson
