Kindergarten and First Grades
will start with this lesson and then continue with the lessons below.

Description of the Unit / Mouse Basics:
The Mouse Basics unit teaches students how to use a mouse, which is fundamental to all other computer tasks.

Lesson One / Select, Drag, and Double Click ~
This lesson teaches students how to use a computer mouse. Students learn to select, drag, and double-click objects.
Type of Activity: Lesson
Estimated Time: 8 minutes

  Materials ~

  • Computer

  • EasyTech Curriculum (subscriber only website)

  • Mouse

  Tech Objectives~

► Student learns what a pointer is and how a pointer device (or mouse) is used.
► Student learns what selected objects look like and how to distinguish them.
► Student learns to select items, one at a time.
► Student learns to change from one selection to another.
► Student learns to select multiple items at a time.
► Student learns to double-click an item.
► Student begins to associate double-clicking with opening.
► Student learns to use a mouse.
► Student learns to move objects (drag and drop an item) from one location to another.

 Core Objectives ~

► Student practices identifying groups of similar objects.
► Student uses hand-eye coordination.
► Student recognizes school-related vocabulary and objects.

  Teacher Notes

► Before taking this lesson, students should be able to recognize a computer mouse, and they should be aware that the mouse is used to move a cursor around on a computer screen. You might want to show a computer mouse to the class. Point out the button they will click to select objects, and draw a cursor arrow on the chalkboard to help students recognize a cursor after they start the lesson.
► You might want to point out to students that a computer mouse can look different on different computers. For example, a mouse can be a touchpad on a notebook computer, or a mouse might include a track ball.

  Extension Ideas ~

► After students take the lesson, have them practice opening an application by double-clicking a program icon on the desktop. For example, you might want to have students double-click an icon that opens a word processing application. Then, students could type their name or other letters or numbers they are learning about in class into a blank document. Have students leave the application window open so you can check their work. Then, you can close the documents without saving changes.
► Have the students practice using a mouse to move items from one folder to another.

The Computer Basics unit teaches students about basic computer components, fundamental computer skills, and basic troubleshooting.

Lesson Two / Working Online ~
In this lesson, teachers use the discussion points to introduce students to EasyTech as well as to networks, usernames and passwords, acceptable use policies, and intellectual property.
Type of Activity: Discussion

  Materials ~

  • Computer

  • EasyTech Curriculum (subscriber only website)

  Tech Objectives~

► Student understands the concept of being online.
► Student learns how to use a surname and password to log on to a network.
► Student learns how to use EasyTech's online help clues as well as those available in other programs.
► Student gains familiarity with acceptable use policies and understands how they apply to EasyTech and to the school and/or computer lab.
► Student understands intellectual property and how it applies to files and software.

 Core Objectives ~

► Student uses technology in a real-world scenario.

Warm-up ~
• Ask the class to give examples of technology. Write them on the board and talk about what technology is and how it affects our lives.
• EasyTech teaches how to use technology. Circle the types of technology that EasyTech focuses on, such as computer hardware, peripherals (scanners, printers, digital cameras), and software.

Activity ~
Discuss EasyTech, and other related topics such as networks, logging on, and acceptable use policies:
• Discuss the concept of being online and connecting to networks.
• Explain how to use usernames and passwords to log on to a network.
• Discuss acceptable use policies and how they are used in EasyTech and in your school.
• Talk about intellectual property and how it applies to files and software at school.

Wrap-up ~
• Have students use their usernames and passwords to log on to EasyTech. Talk about what they see (assigned lesson buttons) and the way you want them to use it.

Extension ~
• Have students take an EasyTech lesson. Talk about what they learned and complete an integration activity. Talk about how you will be using EasyTech throughout the school year.

Lesson Two / Following Computer Rules ~

  2. • Read The Rules by Marty Kelley. Talk about the different rules in the book. Have students heard these rules before? Why are rules created?
  3. • Review the picture on the Activity Page with the students. Talk about the behaviors of each student. Point out the students who are breaking rules and those who are following them. Refer to the model for the explanations of the rules.

Activity

Students find the kids following and breaking rules in the picture:

  1. • After teacher reviews the picture, students use crayons to circle the kids who are following the rules.
