Web Page Design / Backgrounds and Graphics:   Approx. 15 minutes

The students will continue working on designing their individual web page:
They will have about 5 minutes to locate their background.
They will have about 10 minutes to locate animated graphics.
(Once time is up, they will have to begin typing in their text, ready of NOT.)

  1. Click on the "blue E" and press "enter" to open the Internet Explorer

  2. Once the Internet is open, Click in the address bar at the top of the screen (everything should turn blue)

  3. Type in "Google.com" and press "enter"

  4. Once the site is loaded, click in the empty search bar in the center of the screen and type in "free web page backgrounds" and then click on "google search" or press "enter"

  5. Click on the selection titled "Web Page Backgrounds - Free backgrounds"

  6. You will then see a web site that has a listing of options for various free backgounds - there is a list of colors or styles along the left side of the page under Free Backgrounds

  7. Click on the selection you would like to view

  8. Several options will appear - if you want to choose from a different selection, click on the "back" arrow at the top of the browser and you can select another option

  9. Once you find the option you like and want to use (make sure it is one with consistent coloring, not a variety of colors that are both dark and light - text will not show up on those and are impossible to read)
    right click on the choice you are wishing to use as your background

  10. This will bring up a drop-down menu

  11. Choose "Save Picture As...."

  12. This will bring up the "Save Picture" window

  13. Click on the down arrow in the "Save in" address bar

  14. Choose "data on gardner (F:)"

  15. Choose (click one time on the icon for your choice, and it will turn blue, then press the "enter" key on the keyboard) "gardner classes"

  16. Choose "00 - Student Projects"

  17. Choose "your grade level"

  18. Choose "your teacher"

  19. Choose "your folder"

  20. Choose "Web Page"

  21. Choose "your grade level"

  22. Before saving, you will need to click in the "File name:" bar at the bottom of the "Save Picture" window and type in a name for your background that you will recognize from a list later, please be sure to type the letters "bg" at the end of your title (for example~ fallleavesbg) (for~Fall Leaves Background)

  23. Then you will need to click on "Save"

  24. Click in the address bar at the top of the screen (everything should turn blue)

  25. Type in "Google.com" and press "enter"

  26. Once the site is loaded, click in the empty search bar in the center of the screen and type in "free animated graphics" and then click on "google search" or press "enter"

  27. Click on the selection titled "Animation Factory - Free Animations"  or  "Animation Station.com - Free Webmaster Tools"

  28. You will then see a web site that has a listing of options for various free animations - there is a list of topics along the left side of the page for you to click and view

  29. Click on the selection you would like to view

  30. Once you find the option you like and want to use right click on it

  31. This will bring up a drop-down menu

  32. Choose "Save Picture As...."

  33. This will bring up the "Save Picture" window

  34. This should bring you back to your grade level web page folder for this year - if not then do the following:
    ~Click on the down arrow in the "Save in" address bar
    ~Choose "data on gardner (F:)"
    ~Choose (click one time on the icon for your choice, and it will turn blue, then press the "enter" key on the keyboard) "gardner classes"
    ~Choose "00 - Student Projects"
    ~Choose "your grade level"
    ~Choose "your teacher"
    ~Choose "your folder"
    ~Choose "Web Page"
    ~Choose "your grade level"

  35. Before saving, you will need to click in the "File name:" bar at the bottom of the "Save Picture" window and type in a name for your graphic that you will recognize from a list later

  36. Then you will need to click on "Save"

  37. Click on the "Red X" in the upper right corner of the web browser to close the web site.

You have now saved the image you wish to use for your background in your web page folder for this year.  You are now ready to work on typing in your information on the page.  Follow the next set of directions for continuing your web page design work.

 

Web Page Design / Entering Text:  25 minutes (once they complete typing text, they will have time to insert graphics on their page)

  1. Click on the icon for "Microsoft FrontPage"

  2. Press the "Enter" key

  3. Select "File" from the tool bar

  4. Select "Open"

  5. Click on the down arrow in the "Look in:" address bar

  6. Select "data on 'gardner' (F:)

  7. Select "gardner classes"

  8. Select "00 - Student Projects"

  9. Select their grade level folder

  10. Select their folder

  11. Select "web page"

  12. Select this year's grade level

  13. Open their "name's web page"

  14. (If the tags appear - Click on view and click on "views bar")

  15. Begin with editing the background -
    ~ Click on "Format" from the tool bar
    ~ Select "Background"
    ~Clcik on "Browse"
    ~This will take you back to your grade level web folder (If not: go to "data on gardner (F:), gardner classes, 00 - Student Projects, your grade level, your teacher, your folder, your web page folder, and then your grade level)
    ~Click on the name for the image you saved from the Internet for use as your background (remember it should be the one ending with "bg"
    ~ You can also change the colors for the text and hyperlinks as needed to be visible with your background choice
    ~ Click "OK"

  16. Students will then begin to type in their text from the sheets they brought to class with them (some of the teachers sent them down earlier and they are next to the teaching computer).

  17. OPTIONAL - Students may select the type of font they wish to use on their page (select "format" from the toolbar and then select "font"  OR the students can use the tool options from the standard or formatting view options)

 

Web Page Design / Adding Graphics: (if time allows)

  1. Click on the place in the web page where you want the graphic to be placed

  2. Click on "Insert" from the main toolbar

  3. Click on "Picture" and "From File"

  4. This will bring up the "Picture" window

  5. Click on the down arrow in the "Look in:" address bar

  6. Select "data on 'gardner' (F:)

  7. Select "gardner classes"

  8. Select "00 - Student Projects"

  9. Select their grade level folder

  10. Select their folder

  11. Select "web page"

  12. Select this year's grade level

  13. Choose the graphic you wish to insert by clicking on it

  14. Then press the "enter" key or click on "insert"

  15. This will place that graphic on your page

  16. You can click on other positions within your page if you wish to place other graphics or a copy of the same graphic and then follow the same steps again from #2 - #14

 

Saving the Web Page Design: 3 minutes


Since you have already saved the page in your folder previously, we are simply saving the changes made

  1. Click on the "Red X" in the upper right corner of the page

  2. When it asks you if you want to save changes, say "yes"

 

[If this is the first time you have worked on your page, you will need to follow one of the options given below for saving:

Option 1 For Saving:

  1. Click on the Folder with the back arrow from the tool bar

  2. Choose the Student's Folder

  3. Choose "Web Page"

  4. Choose grade level
    Rename before saving
    "Name's Web Page" (highlight and do "Control C" to copy)
           Click on "Change Title" (while highlighted, do "control V" to
                  paste the previous title"
           Click Ok

  5. Click Save

  6. Click on the "Red X" at the top of the screen to close the web page

 

Option 2 For Saving:

  1. Click on the down arrow that appears in the "save in:" address bar

  2. Check on the list for -
    ~ data on 'gardner' (F:)
    ~ gardner classes
    ~ 00 - Student Projects
    ~ (Their teacher's name)
    ~ Once they click on their teacher's name their work will be saved in that file

  3. Click in the "File name:" window or bar at the bottom of the "Save As" window

  4. Make sure all of the current name is highlighted in blue

  5. Type in -
    ~ First name's Web Page

  6. Click Save

  7. Click on the "Red X" at the top of the screen to close the web page]

 

Cleaning Up Your Area: Last 3 minutes

  1. Please make sure your keyboard is placed back on the edge of your table space

  2. Please place the mouse pad next to the keyboard along the edge of the table space

  3. Make sure your mouse is placed in the center of the mouse pad

  4. Please make sure your chair is placed back under your table and that the legs of the chair are completely under the table and not overlapping the table legs.

Exiting the Room:

  1. Please turn and face the window area

  2. Wait for your row to be called and follow the person in front of you (beginning with row 1, then row 2, row 3, the side row, and finally row 4)

  3. The first person will stop at the door and wait for your teacher to pick you up

  4. Be sure you are standing in traveling position facing forward

  5. Have a GREAT week and we'll see you next time for Technology Lab!
