Unit 2 - World Wildlife: Evaluation Lesson.
Description
of the Unit:
In
World Wildlife, the second of five units, the children use a
database application to identify and locate an animal missing from the
World Wildlife Zoo. They are introduced to basic database
functions in the first lesson as they sort a list of zoo animals.
In the lessons that follow, they enter information into new records, and
format database tables and forms. By filtering these accumulated
data, they discover why the animal escaped and determine where to locate
it. In the process, the students use their desktop publishing
skills to create a MISSING! poster and a newsletter reporting the
animal's safe return to the zoo.
Evaluation
Lesson ~
The students will review the lessons covered during the unit. We
will discuss each lesson: the activity, the type of technology skill and
curriculum connection covered, and what made it an easy of difficult
lesson to complete.
Materials
~
Opening ~ Discuss what we will be doing in this
activity. Introduce the "Evaluation Form" that is saved on the
server in the grade level file for each student to open and complete.
Steps Covered in the Lesson ~
-
Introduce the activity
-
Launch the "Evaluation Form"
-
Students type in their name
-
Discuss each lesson from the
unit:
Lesson 1 - Map ~
-
Lesson Activity: The students
created a map of the new zoo using attribute blocks. This would
allow the builders to know what color, size, and shape materials would
be needed for the zoo's addition. It also provided a new map for
visitors to the zoo.
-
Technology / Skill Covered:
Database / Science and Math
Lesson 2 - Family ~
-
Lesson Activity: The students
were to select the best habitat for the animals in the zoo. They
were to sort the animals by type, and then organize them from biggest
to smallest.
-
Technology / Skill Covered:
Desktop Publishing / Science
Lesson 3 - Snakes ~
-
Lesson Activity: The students
completed various patterns on pictures of snakes. The students
also used a second activity to create a "Snake Chain" connecting
attribute blocks that shared at least on common attribute (size,
color, or shape). The "snake" could then be moved around the
computer screen by clicking and dragging the first shape of the chain.
-
Technology / Skill Covered:
Desktop Publishing and Database / Math
Lesson 4 - Workers ~
-
Lesson Activity: The students
sorted the various workers to form teams. The teams had to
contain the same number of people. Students sorted workers by
various attributes (hair, noses, and shoes). Students also
completed a poster about different animals and their feeding time.
The students were to place signs by each animal identifying what type
of animal it was and helping the zoo determine the type of food to
feed them.
-
Technology / Skill Covered:
Database and Desktop Publishing / Science and Math
Lesson 5 - Yekttis ~
-
Lesson Activity: The students
worked on sorting the Yekttis on and "X" and "Y" axis based upon
different attributes (color, shape, etc). The students were to
sort the Yekttis and place them on a grid identifying points of
intersection based upon the attributes identified on the "X" and "Y"
axis. The students also completed a poster organizing various
fish on a Venn Diagram based upon the attribute of color.
-
Technology / Skill Covered:
Database and Desktop Publishing / Science and Math
Lesson 6 - Hats ~
-
Lesson Activity: The students
sort various hats into groups to be given to the workers at the zoo.
They sort them based upon the attributes of color and shape.
Students use axes to plot the existing hats and to add new ones they
create using the create tool.
-
Technology / Skill Covered:
Database / Science and Math
Assessment Lesson - Visitors ~
-
Lesson Activity: The students
demonstrate their sorting skills as they organize zoo visitors by
looping, stacking, and using axes. The students add data and
arrange the zoo visitors in rows according to similar attributes.
-
Technology / Skill Covered:
Database / Science
-
Students will need to select
their favorite lesson and enter that choice on the form "worksheet"
-
Discuss the students' choices
-
Complete sentence #1 ~ I like
this project because:
-
Discuss the technology skills
covered and select them in #2
-
Students type in their answer
for #3 ~ What was the hardest thing to do during this project?
-
Students type in their answer
for #4 ~ What was the most fun thing to do during this project?
-
Chart the Favorites selected by
the students
-
Review the skills covered in the
unit from the Assessment Checklist
