Unit 2 - World Wildlife: Assessment Lesson.
Description
of the Unit:
In
World Wildlife, the second of five units, the children use a
database application to identify and locate an animal missing from the
World Wildlife Zoo. They are introduced to basic database
functions in the first lesson as they sort a list of zoo animals.
In the lessons that follow, they enter information into new records, and
format database tables and forms. By filtering these accumulated
data, they discover why the animal escaped and determine where to locate
it. In the process, the students use their desktop publishing
skills to create a MISSING! poster and a newsletter reporting the
animal's safe return to the zoo.
Assessment Lesson ~
The students demonstarte their sorting skills as they organize zoo
visitors by looping, stacking, and using axes. The children
in grades 1 and 2 add data and arrange the zoo visitros in rows
according to dimilar attributes. In the sexong half of the lesson,
the pupils review the unit's projects and select a favorite.
Finally, the students participate in a group discussion to share what
was fun and what was challenging about creating the project..

rather than a written worksheet activity.)
Opening ~ Review Lesson Six. Review the
lessons from the unit with the class. Have the students recall the
name of the database profram they used during the unit. Ask them
to identify some of the different ways they organized objects in
Tabletop Jr., and confirm that objects were classified according to
their attributes by grouping, stacking, looping, and plotting on axes.
What different types of objects were sorted on the tabletop?
Remind them that they organized attribute blocks to complete a map,
arranged the Snood zoo workers into teams, sorted the Yekttis and
analyzed hats for the zoo visitors.
Announce to the students that
today is the first day the World Wildlife Zoo will be open to visitors.
They will use their sorting skills to determine information about the
