Unit 2 - World Wildlife: Orange PC Lesson Six.

 Description of the Unit:
In World Wildlife, the second of five units, the children use a database application to identify and locate an animal missing from the World Wildlife Zoo.  They are introduced to basic database functions in the first lesson as they sort a list of zoo animals.  In the lessons that follow, they enter information into new records, and format database tables and forms.  By filtering these accumulated data, they discover why the animal escaped and determine where to locate it.  In the process, the students use their desktop publishing skills to create a MISSING! poster and a newsletter reporting the animal's safe return to the zoo.

Lesson Six ~  The students will demonstrate their database abilities by organizing hats that will be given to zoo visitros in stacks according to different attributes.  Then azes are used to plot the existing hats and to add new ones.  Students analyze additional hats as objects that are arranged according to similar features.

  Materials ~

  • Tabletop Jr.

  • Template: "HATS.TTJ"

  • Template: "MOREHATS.TTJ"

Opening ~  Review Lesson Five.  Have the students recall studying Yekttis by moving them into loops according to different attributes, and remind them that they played a game byu having one partner hide a Yekttis in the Shed and having the other partner determine which Yekktis was hidden.

Begin today's lesson with a discussion to see if anyone has ever worn a hat at a birthday party.  Can they describe the hat?  What shape was it?  What color was it?  Inform the students that today they will organize some silly hats which will be given to visitors of the World Wildlife Zoo.
