Introduction of Unit 2 - World Wildlife: Orange
PC Lesson Four.
Description
of the Unit:
In
World Wildlife, the second of five units, the children use a
database application to identify and locate an animal missing from the
World Wildlife Zoo. They are introduced to basic database
functions in the first lesson as they sort a list of zoo animals.
In the lessons that follow, they enter information into new records, and
format database tables and forms. By filtering these accumulated
data, they discover why the animal escaped and determine where to locate
it. In the process, the students use their desktop publishing
skills to create a MISSING! poster and a newsletter reporting the
animal's safe return to the zoo.
Lesson Four ~
The students will practice their sorting skills as they organize Snoods
into stacks according to different attributes. In the second
portion of this lesson, the students use logical relationships described
by and, or and not to assign food to animals.
Materials
~
-
Tabletop Jr.
-
Print Artist
-
Template: "WORKERS.TTJ"
-

Opening ~ Review Lesson Three. Have the
students recall what the term pattern means, and remind them that they
arranged patterns to complete a colorful picture of snakes.
Ask the students to describe the
duties of workers at a zoo. Answers may include feeding and
grooming the animals, selling food and other items to visitors, cleaning
the zoo and providing tours. Announce that today they will help
the World Wildlife Zoo by organizing all of the workers into teams.
Ask the class what type of computer program should be used to sort and
organize the workers into groups, and confirm that a database program
can be used when information must be organized.
